Vitality overpower FURIA to secure IEM Rio 2026 Grand Final berth

Team Vitality booked their place in the grand final of IEM Rio 2026 after a composed 2-0 victory over FURIA Esports, winning both Overpass and Ancient by identical 13-10 scorelines.

The semi-final carried significant weight not only because of the Brazilian crowd backing FURIA, but also due to Vitality’s ongoing pursuit of history. With this win, Dan “apEX” Madesclaire’s squad moved just one series away from claiming a second ESL Grand Slam—potentially becoming the first team in Counter-Strike history to achieve the feat twice, and even more notably, in back-to-back fashion.

Unorthodox veto and Ancient gamble

The map veto introduced an unusual dynamic. Both teams typically treat Ancient as a permaban, yet neither side removed it early, allowing FURIA to select it as a “punish pick.” This mirrored a previous successful attempt by the Brazilian side, when they defeated Vitality on the same map during the IEM Chengdu grand final.

However, this time the gamble did not pay off.

Overpass: Vitality recover from slow start

FURIA came out strong on Overpass, building a commanding 6-0 lead behind solid defensive work from Kaike “KSCERATO” Cerato and Yuri “yuurih” Santos.

Vitality gradually stabilized before halftime, largely thanks to the impact of Mathieu Herbaut (ZywOo) and Robin Kool (ropz), reducing the deficit to 5-7.

After switching to the CT side, Vitality seized control. A pivotal moment came from Shahar Shushan (flameZ), who bounced back from a kill-less first half with a crucial triple-kill flank that shifted momentum decisively. From there, Vitality closed the map 13-10 despite a few late-round recoveries from FURIA.

Ancient: FURIA’s pick falls short

On Ancient, FURIA aimed to capitalize on their earlier success with the map, but the game remained tightly contested throughout. The first half ended 6-6, with both sides trading streaks and control.

Vitality once again proved more consistent in key moments. Their T-side execution, combined with another strong showing from ZywOo, allowed them to regain momentum after brief setbacks—including a 1v2 clutch from yuurih. Ultimately, Vitality secured the map 13-10 and closed the series 2-0.

Key performance edge

Across the series, Vitality displayed superior overall efficiency, finishing with more kills (163 vs 144) and maintaining better control in decisive rounds.

ZywOo and ropz were central to the comeback on Overpass and the stabilization on Ancient, while flameZ’s recovery performance highlighted the depth of the roster.

What’s next: Grand Final vs Spirit

With the victory, Vitality advance to face Team Spirit in the grand final of IEM Rio 2026. The matchup marks their first meeting of the year, adding further intrigue given both teams’ contrasting trajectories—Vitality’s dominance versus Spirit’s resurgence through the bracket.

Meanwhile, FURIA drop to the third-place decider, where they will have one final opportunity to close out their home tournament on a high note.

Context: Vitality’s era and Grand Slam chase

Vitality’s current run continues what has already been one of the most dominant periods in modern Counter-Strike. With recent titles at IEM Dallas, ESL Pro League Season 22, and IEM Krakow, they are now on the brink of cementing an unprecedented legacy with a second Grand Slam.

A victory in the grand final would not only secure the Rio trophy but also place them in a category of their own in CS history.
