Fact-Checking Policy
Last updated: September 19, 2025
Scope
This policy defines how we verify facts for news, features, and data pieces.
Methodology
- Pre-publication checks: confirm identities, roles, quotes (recordings/written statements), and stats (official operators or public datasets).
- Rumors require at least two independent indications or documents and are labeled Rumor.
- Evidence hierarchy: primary documents/data > on-the-record statements > corroborated off-record sourcing > reputable secondary reporting.
- Data integrity: we reproduce key calculations and note methodology and limitations.
Reviewer role
Editors conduct spot-checks on sensitive stories. At least one editor not involved in reporting reviews the final version before publication.
Post-publication audits
We monitor reader feedback and retro-check high-impact stories. Confirmed issues route to the Corrections workflow.
