MATYS Relieved as G2 Gets Much Needed Rest After Grueling Schedule

G2 rifler Matúš “MATYS” Šimko expressed his relief after securing two days of rest, calling it “feels like Christmas” following a packed stretch of travel and competition. The rest comes after G2 flew immediately to Belgrade post-BLAST Open London, to continue their run at FISSURE Playground 2

A Draining Back-to-Back Trip

  • G2 had just taken the title at BLAST Open London, but there was no time to enjoy it — the squad flew directly to Belgrade for FISSURE Playground 2. The rapid transition has clearly worn on the team.

  • At the Belgrade event, G2 got through the group stage with a 3-1 record. Although they advanced, MATYS admitted that the team has yet to reach the same level of performance they showed in London, particularly pointing out struggles on certain maps.

Overpass: A Recurring Thorn

  • One consistent issue for G2 has been Overpass. MATYS said that while the team knows how strong they can be on that map, mental pressure and moment-to-moment decision-making have often faltered. They seem to have the strategies mapped out, but execution in critical moments has lagged.

  • The pressure has come in recent Officials (i.e. competitive matches) since their Vitality game. Overpass has been where they feel the most hesitance under pressure, even when they believe they have the right in-game ideas.

Playoffs in Sight & Upcoming Matchups

  • With the group stage concluded, G2’s sights are now set on the playoffs, which take place in the Belgrade Arena. MATYS named Falcons as a team he’s especially looking forward to facing, describing them as having “extremely good individuals” and stating that a match against them will be “a hell of a fight” should it come to that.

  • The rest period is likely to be used for recovery, tactical review, and map-by-map improvements. Especially on Overpass, where G2 have identified mental pressure as a factor. The break gives them breathing room.

MATYS’ Self-Criticism & Team Spirit

  • MATYS himself was highly self-critical about G2’s showing, especially in the first map of the series against GamerLegion. He admitted the team “played so badly … as individuals, everything was off,” and said he personally had a very poor performance. But he praised G2’s resilience, highlighting how quickly they recovered in the subsequent maps (Ancient and Inferno) to close out a win.

  • Despite difficulties, he said the team’s “insane spirit” carried them through. He felt that, though the first map was rough, what followed made it feel like the match “never happened” — a testament to their ability to reset under pressure.

Significance of the Two Days Off

  • MATYS emphasized just how rare knowing you’ll get consecutive days off is for high-level competitive teams. Given back-to-back events and international travel, rest is hard to come by. For him, those two days off are more than just rest — they represent mental decompression. He likened the feeling to Christmas.

  • Physiological rest aside, the break should help G2 analyze what has gone wrong in close maps, especially Overpass, and reboot before the playoffs. Mental fatigue is known to degrade decision-making under pressure; this downtime could allow them to re-gain composure and sharpen execution.

What to Watch Going Forward

  • Will G2 be able to translate rest into performance improvements, particularly on maps they’ve struggled with (Overpass)?

  • How will they adjust mental preparation — especially for those tough rounds where they have the strategy, but fail to execute?

  • What tactical or lineup tweaks might be announced or observed in the upcoming matches, now that they have a breather?

  • The match vs Falcons looks like a key test — if it materializes — for both G2’s current fitness (mental, physical) and how well they can maintain their level from London while integrating travel, fatigue, and pressure.
