Esports World Cup 2026 Officially Moves to Paris Amid Middle East Tensions

Esports World Cup 2026 Officially Moves to Paris Amid Middle East Tensions
The Esports World Cup 2026 will officially take place in Paris, France, instead of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, organizers confirmed this week. The decision comes after rising geopolitical tensions in the Middle East created uncertainty around hosting the massive esports festival in Saudi Arabia. According to HLTV, the move has already been approved under Valve’s tournament regulations despite the late venue change.
The relocation marks a historic shift for the tournament, as it will be the first time the Esports World Cup (EWC) is held outside Saudi Arabia since the event’s launch.
Esports World Cup 2026 CS2 Tournament Details
The Counter-Strike 2 tournament at EWC 2026 is still scheduled for August 12-23, 2026, and will feature:
- 32 teams
- $2,000,000 prize pool
- Expanded playoff format
- LAN open qualifier with up to 128 teams
Tournament organizers stated that the move to Paris will not impact the overall competitive structure.
“All announced titles, tournaments, and competitive formats remain unchanged. A slight shift in the tournament schedule is possible.”
The statement was provided by the Esports World Cup Foundation to HLTV following the announcement of the relocation.
Why Was Esports World Cup Moved From Riyadh to Paris?
The tournament’s relocation follows escalating instability in the region surrounding Iran, which reportedly raised concerns for teams, partners, and tournament operations. Earlier reports from GamesBeat suggested organizers were already exploring backup European venues before the official confirmation.
While Riyadh was initially expected to remain the long-term home of EWC, organizers ultimately chose Paris to ensure operational stability and international accessibility for players, fans, and broadcast partners.
The Esports World Cup Foundation also confirmed that additional information regarding venues, ticketing, schedules, and European broadcast times will be revealed soon.
EWC 2026 Features Major CS2 Expansion
The Paris edition of EWC will also introduce the largest Counter-Strike tournament expansion in the event’s history.
Earlier reporting from HLTV revealed several major changes for 2026:
- Expansion from 16 to 32 teams
- Double-elimination group stage
- 16-team playoff bracket
- Large-scale LAN open qualifier system
These changes position EWC 2026 as one of the biggest non-Major Counter-Strike events ever held.
Lynn Vision Already Qualified for EWC 2026
Chinese team Lynn Vision became one of the first confirmed participants for the tournament after winning the Hero Esports Asian Champions League 2026 in Shanghai.
The team secured its EWC slot by defeating JiJieHao in the grand final and claiming the region’s direct qualification spot.
EWC Expansion Already Impacted the CS2 Calendar
The enlarged Esports World Cup schedule has already affected the wider Counter-Strike ecosystem. Tournament organizer PGL previously cancelled its planned August 2026 event after EWC expanded its tournament dates and format.
PGL stated that another event had been announced later than expected and created an unavoidable overlap in the competitive calendar.
Paris Set to Host One of the Biggest Esports Events of 2026
With a larger format, multi-million-dollar prize pool, and global attention surrounding the venue change, the Esports World Cup 2026 in Paris is expected to become one of the most-watched esports events of the year.
