Valve Briefly Changes the Dust2 Mid Box in CS2 — Then Reverts the Update
Valve quietly introduced — and then quickly removed — a small change to Dust2’s mid “X-box” in Counter-Strike 2 (CS2), sparking discussion among players about potential map tweaks and Valve’s testing process.
The modification appeared shortly after a recent CS2 update but was later rolled back without explanation.
What Valve Changed on Dust2
The change affected the well-known X-box position in Dust2 mid, one of the most iconic pieces of cover on the map.
For a short time, the classic single crate model was replaced with a structure consisting of several stacked boxes. The altered version also included a small hollow space on the right side, slightly changing the geometry of the position.
However, the modification was removed soon afterward, restoring the familiar Dust2 layout.
Valve has not issued an official comment explaining the temporary change or the decision to revert it.
The Change Was Not Mentioned in Patch Notes
Interestingly, the Dust2 adjustment was not included in Valve’s official patch notes for the March update.
The only Dust2-related change listed was a fix for a pixel gap on a door outside Long, which could potentially be exploited by players.
Most of the update instead focused on new cosmetic content, including the Dead Hand Collection, which introduced:
-
17 weapon skins created by community artists
-
22 new gloves as rare special items
-
A Dead Hand Terminal, which can appear as a weekly drop
Valve Has Been Actively Tweaking Maps in CS2
While the X-box tweak was brief, Valve has recently made several map adjustments across Counter-Strike 2.
For example, a March update introduced notable changes to Inferno, including:
-
An extended A-site balcony
-
Removal of the Graveyard position
-
Adjustments to clipping near second mid balcony
Valve also updated community maps Warden and Sanctum.
Dust2 Has Already Received Gameplay Changes in CS2
Dust2 itself has undergone multiple changes since the release of Counter-Strike 2.
In July 2024, Valve modified the crates near CT spawn, allowing players to reach Catwalk without requiring a teammate boost.
That adjustment was one of the first gameplay-impacting layout changes after Dust2 returned to the competitive map pool in April 2024, replacing Overpass following the PGL Copenhagen Major.
Pro Players on Why Dust2 Changes Matter
Even small map tweaks attract attention because Dust2 is one of the most studied maps in Counter-Strike history.
Former Vitality in-game leader Alex “ALEX” McMeekin once explained why consistency on Dust2 is so difficult:
“Everyone knows the map through and through. Nothing much has changed on it over the years. Everyone knows everything you can do on the map.”
Professional players still treat the map with extreme respect.
After a match against Spirit in 2024, Justinas “jL” Lekavičius commented on Dust2 picks:
“I feel like they made a little mistake by picking Dust2, because it’s not our weak map.”
Meanwhile, Aleksi “Aleksib” Virolainen emphasized preparation for the map during a 2025 match:
“We started with our pick, Dust2. We did, I feel like, a good preparation.”
Why the X-Box Change Sparked Discussion
The X-box in mid plays a critical role in Dust2 gameplay. It allows Terrorist players to:
-
Cross safely from T-spawn toward Catwalk
-
Control mid angles
-
Execute fast mid-to-B strategies
Because of its importance, even minor geometry changes can affect professional strategies and utility usage.
For Now, Dust2 Remains Unchanged
With Valve reverting the update, Dust2 currently remains in its classic form in CS2.
Whether the temporary X-box redesign was an internal experiment, a visual test, or an accidental deployment remains unknown.
Still, the brief change shows that Valve continues experimenting with map design in Counter-Strike 2, even on the game’s most legendary battlefield.
