StarLadder Budapest Major 2025 — Overview & Developments
The StarLadder Budapest Major 2025 is set to become the fourth Major tournament in the Counter-Strike 2 (CS2) era. It will take place in Budapest, Hungary, from November 24 to December 14, 2025, with 32 teams competing for a prize pool of USD 1,250,000.
This event marks the first time a Major is hosted in Hungary. Earlier, StarLadder had run Majors under CS:GO, but this is their return to the top-tier Major circuit under CS2.
Format & Structure
The tournament is structured in four stages: three group (Swiss-style) stages, followed by a playoff bracket. Matches use MR12 rules (first to 13 rounds), with overtime continuing in MR3 until a winner is decided. The group stages will filter teams step by step until 8 teams advance to the playoffs. Playoffs will adopt a single-elimination bracket with best-of-3 matches.
The map pool includes traditional maps such as Dust II, Inferno, Ancient, Train, and Anubis, among others.
Group Stage breakdown:
Stage 1: November 24–27, 2025. 16 teams from regional qualifying (MRQ) compete.
Stage 2: November 29 – December 2. Eight invited teams (via VRS ranking) join eight survivors from Stage 1.
Stage 3: December 4–7. The final elimination of teams before playoffs.
Playoffs: December 10–14 at a larger venue (MVM Dome) with capacity over 20,000 spectators.
The earlier stages (Stage 1 through Stage 3) will be held at MTK Sportpark.
Invitations, MRQs & Qualification
Invitations and VRS (Valve Regional Standings) standings will play a key role in determining which teams are directly invited vs. which must qualify.
The Major Regional Qualifiers (MRQs) will take place October 16–19, 2025.
The cutoff for invites via VRS is October 6, 2025.
Some last-minute shifts in team standings are expected, as a small number of teams remain in contention for those final invite slots.
Prize Distribution & Stakes
According to the HLTV event overview, the prize breakdown is as follows:
1st place: USD 500,000
2nd place: USD 170,000
3rd–4th: USD 80,000 each
5th–8th: USD 45,000 each
9th–14th: USD 20,000 each
15th–16th: USD 20,000 each
The total prize pool thus serves as a major incentive for global teams striving for prestige and financial reward.
Partnerships & Infrastructure
StarLadder has secured Esports Charts as the official viewership analytics partner for the event. Also, media accreditation is open, including for creators, photographers, and esports journalists. Ticket sales have already proceeded in waves, with the final wave being launched ahead of the Playoff stage. The organizers emphasize the ambition to deliver “unforgettable” CS2 experience in Budapest, leveraging the local venues’ capacities and production capabilities.
Additional Context & Notable Players
While the official sources have not (yet) published extensive quotes from players about this particular Major, we can look at current trajectories of top players and teams to frame expectations:
ZywOo (Team Vitality): Already having won the BLAST.tv Austin Major 2025, ZywOo is riding high in form. His consistency and past Major experience will likely make him one of the favorites.
ropz (Team Vitality): Having moved to Vitality in 2025, ropz has had strong performances and synergy with the team, adding further depth to Vitality’s Major ambitions.
NiKo: After transferring to Team Falcons in 2025, NiKo continues to be a high-impact rifler. Falcons’ performances in qualifiers and MRQs will be watched closely.
Given the competitive field, teams and commentators have frequently emphasized that form, adaptability to map pool, and resilience in Swiss-stage formats will all be decisive.
