phzy shines in front of home crowd as Astralis defeat Spirit at EPL Season 23 Finals

Astralis’ Swedish AWPer Love “phzy” Smidebrant delivered one of the strongest performances of his recent career during the ESL Pro League Season 23 Finals, helping his team secure a convincing victory over Spirit in the playoffs. The match took place in Stockholm, where the local audience provided noticeable support for the Swedish player, something he later said may have helped him produce what he jokingly called a “life game.”

Astralis defeated Spirit in a dominant series, with phzy posting an outstanding 1.76 rating and nearly 100 average damage per round (ADR). The performance also included a massive positive round impact of +7.48, highlighting how influential he was in the server throughout the match. According to the player himself, the series felt surprisingly comfortable from inside the game, even though the scoreline looked one-sided from the outside.

After the match, phzy admitted that playing in Sweden made the moment particularly special. Competing in Stockholm in front of a supportive crowd gave him extra motivation, and he said the atmosphere was clearly noticeable while playing. He thanked the fans who stayed late to cheer for the team, suggesting that the energy from the audience may have contributed to his standout performance.

The win marks an important step for Astralis during the ongoing ESL Pro League season. The Danish organization rebuilt its roster earlier in 2026 as part of a broader international project, bringing in new players and shifting the team’s structure. phzy joined Astralis as part of this overhaul and has been steadily establishing himself within the lineup. Since joining the team, the 23-year-old AWPer has averaged around a 1.11 rating, indicating solid form and growing confidence in the new environment.

Against Spirit, that consistency translated into a career-highlight performance. Astralis controlled the series from start to finish, leaving little room for their opponents to recover. While phzy acknowledged that Spirit might not have played their best game, he also credited his own team for executing their strategies well and maintaining control across the maps.

The victory secured Astralis a spot in the top four of ESL Pro League Season 23, representing one of the team’s most significant results since the roster rebuild. Interestingly, phzy revealed that the squad had not set strict expectations going into the event. Instead, the players focused on taking the tournament one match at a time, gradually building confidence as the event progressed.

Looking ahead, Astralis were set to face Aurora in the next stage of the playoffs. The matchup carried an additional storyline for phzy, as Aurora’s lineup includes Caner “soulfly” Kesici, a former teammate of his from their time playing together in Sangal. The Swedish AWPer said facing a former teammate always adds a personal element to the match and makes the encounter more exciting.

The semifinal appearance also holds personal significance for phzy. Earlier in his career he reached the playoffs of ESL Pro League while playing with Ninjas in Pyjamas but was unable to advance further after a loss to ENCE. Now competing with Astralis, he expressed hope that this tournament run could finally allow him to break past that barrier.

Another factor increasing Astralis’ chances is the shifting landscape of the tournament bracket. Several teams that were considered favorites — including Spirit and MOUZ — had already been eliminated, leaving the remaining teams with a realistic shot at the title. According to phzy, this creates an unusually open race for the championship, where multiple squads could potentially lift the trophy depending on form during the final stages of the event.

Despite the impressive result, Astralis still faced strong competition from teams such as NAVI, FUT, and Aurora, all of whom had shown solid performances during the tournament. phzy emphasized that the level of play across the playoffs remained high and that every remaining team had proven capable of winning important matches.

For phzy personally, the victory over Spirit may represent a turning point in his career trajectory. The Swedish sniper has shown flashes of high-level potential in the past — including during previous stints in tier-one tournaments — but has often spoken about the challenge of reaching that level consistently. Recent performances with Astralis suggest he may finally be approaching that consistency.

If Astralis manage to maintain their momentum in the later stages of ESL Pro League Season 23, phzy’s breakout performance in Stockholm could be remembered as one of the key moments of the team’s campaign. With the home crowd behind him and confidence growing within the lineup, the Swedish AWPer has demonstrated that he can deliver when the stakes are highest.
