paiN Send FaZe to 0-2 Pool at ESL Pro League Season 23

Brazilian side paiN Gaming deepened FaZe Clan’s struggles at ESL Pro League Season 23, defeating the European lineup 2–1 and sending them into the dangerous 0–2 pool in the tournament’s Swiss stage. The result further highlighted FaZe’s difficult start to the 2026 competitive season and placed them one loss away from elimination.

The match took place during Stage 2 of ESL Pro League S23, where teams compete in a Swiss system: three wins are required to advance to the playoffs, while three losses result in elimination. Because of their ranking, FaZe skipped Stage 1 and entered the competition directly in Stage 2, but their campaign quickly went off track after consecutive defeats.

paiN capitalize on FaZe’s poor form

The Brazilian squad managed to overturn FaZe in a tightly contested best-of-three series. Despite FaZe showing moments of resistance, paiN demonstrated stronger mid-series adjustments and composure in key rounds, ultimately securing a 2–1 victory. The match lasted more than three hours and was one of the longest series of the early Stage 2 rounds.

Individually, several paiN players delivered strong performances throughout the series. The team’s in-game leader Rodrigo “biguzera” Bittencourt played a key role with impactful fragging and leadership, while AWPer Lucas “nqz” Soares and rifler Vinicius “vsm” Moreira also contributed important rounds. Their collective effort helped paiN maintain control in decisive moments and close out the series.

For FaZe, Helvijs “broky” Saukants once again stood out statistically, producing solid individual numbers, but the team struggled to convert those performances into consistent round wins. Other players such as Twistzz, frozen, and in-game leader Finn “karrigan” Andersen were unable to stabilize the team’s overall performance, especially during high-pressure situations late in the maps.

A worrying trend for FaZe in 2026

The loss continues a troubling pattern for FaZe this year. According to tournament coverage, the roster has managed to win only two matches in 2026 at the time of the event, a dramatic drop in form for a lineup that previously competed for major titles.

Their difficulties were already visible on the opening day of Stage 2. FaZe suffered a heavy defeat in their first series, including a 13–1 loss on their own map pick Dust2, highlighting tactical and confidence issues within the squad. That result also contributed to a worrying statistic: the team had gone 1–8 on its map picks during 2026, despite experimenting with several different choices throughout the season.

These problems have raised concerns about the team’s ability to compete consistently at the highest level. While the roster still features some of the most experienced players in the scene, their coordination and map control have often looked shaky compared to other top teams in the current meta.

ESL Pro League context

ESL Pro League Season 23 remains one of the most prestigious events in the Counter-Strike calendar, featuring many of the world’s best teams and a significant prize pool. Stage 2 includes several elite squads such as Natus Vincere, Astralis, Spirit, Aurora, and The MongolZ, many of whom began the stage with victories.

Within the Swiss format, teams in the 0–2 bracket face elimination matches. Every series becomes a do-or-die scenario, making recovery extremely difficult. For FaZe, this means they must now win three consecutive matches to survive and reach the playoffs.

paiN keep their EPL run alive

For paiN Gaming, the win represented an important boost in confidence against a historically stronger opponent. Although FaZe had dominated the head-to-head record between the two teams prior to the match, the Brazilian lineup managed to seize the opportunity and keep their EPL campaign alive.

The victory also reflects the steady rise of Brazilian Counter-Strike in international tournaments. Teams from the region have increasingly challenged European lineups in recent seasons, and paiN’s performance against FaZe is another example of that growing competitiveness.

What comes next

With the loss, FaZe dropped into the 0–2 elimination pool, where any additional defeat would end their ESL Pro League run. The team now faces enormous pressure to turn its season around and prove that its veteran roster can still compete at the top level.

Meanwhile, paiN continue their journey in the Swiss bracket with renewed momentum. If they maintain the level shown against FaZe, the Brazilian squad could become one of the tournament’s surprise contenders as the competition progresses.

Overall, the series not only reshaped the early standings of ESL Pro League Season 23 but also emphasized the ongoing struggles of one of Counter-Strike’s most recognizable teams. Whether FaZe can recover from this difficult position—or whether paiN’s upset marks a broader shift in the competitive landscape—remains one of the key storylines of the tournament.
