NiKo Reveals Why Falcons Chose karrigan: “It Was Basically Him or No One Else”
Falcons betting on karrigan leadership ahead of the CS2 Major
Nikola Kovač has revealed that Finn Andersen was the only in-game leader Falcons seriously considered before making a major roster change ahead of the Counter-Strike 2 Major season.
Speaking after Falcons qualified for the playoffs at PGL Astana 2026, NiKo explained that the organization did not want to gamble on just any IGL available on the market.
“There are not many IGLs that we would have taken, basically, it was only Finn or no one else,” NiKo said in an interview with HLTV.org.
The statement highlights just how highly Falcons rate karrigan’s leadership experience and playoff pedigree as the Saudi-backed organization continues its push toward becoming a true CS2 championship contender.
Why Falcons signed karrigan
Falcons entered Astana under pressure after inconsistent results throughout the first half of the season. Despite having one of the most expensive and star-studded rosters in Counter-Strike, the team struggled to develop a stable identity in high-pressure matches.
According to NiKo, the arrival of karrigan immediately changed the team’s structure and communication style.
The Bosnian superstar explained that karrigan’s system demands significantly more initiative from every player. Rather than relying on rigid mid-round plans, the veteran IGL prefers constant communication and information sharing so he can adapt on the fly.
NiKo admitted that Falcons are still adjusting to the new style. He noted that when matches become difficult, some players still “shut down,” limiting the amount of information karrigan receives during rounds.
That adaptation period became visible early at PGL Astana.
Falcons’ results with karrigan at PGL Astana
Falcons started karrigan’s debut event with a clean 2-0 victory over K27 but quickly ran into problems against 9z, suffering a brutal 13-1 defeat on Dust2.
The team recovered with a narrow win against Monte before producing one of the tournament’s biggest comebacks versus The MongolZ.
Falcons overturned a 4-10 deficit on Mirage to secure playoff qualification, with Ilya Osipov and kyousuke delivering crucial late-round performances.
Following the victory, NiKo emphasized that fans should not expect instant perfection from the new lineup.
“When you change the IGL, you change pretty much the whole system and the whole team,” he explained.
The comment reflects the broader challenge Falcons face: transforming individual firepower into a cohesive championship roster before the Major cycle intensifies.
zonic gives karrigan “the keys to the ship”
Falcons head coach Danny Sørensen has also publicly backed the signing.
In earlier interviews, zonic said the organization was effectively giving karrigan “the keys to the ship,” trusting the Danish veteran to rebuild the team’s identity and mentality.
The coach praised karrigan’s leadership qualities, energy, and ability to handle high-pressure playoff environments — areas where Falcons often appeared vulnerable earlier in the season.
karrigan himself also addressed expectations after joining the team, saying he wants opponents to once again fear facing his teams in arena matches and playoff series.
End of an era for FaZe Clan
The transfer also marked the end of karrigan’s legendary second stint with FaZe Clan.
During his time with FaZe, the Danish captain won multiple elite trophies, including the PGL Antwerp Major and the Intel Grand Slam Season 4.
FaZe officially confirmed his departure in April after weeks of transfer speculation linked him with Falcons.
Former teammate Russel Van Dulken later admitted he did not think the separation was handled perfectly internally, although he acknowledged the difficult nature of roster transitions in elite Counter-Strike.
Can karrigan make Falcons a CS2 title contender?
The key question now is whether karrigan can transform Falcons into a genuine championship-caliber CS2 team before the biggest events of the year.
NiKo appears convinced the veteran leader brings qualities the roster previously lacked — especially on stage.
“He is a very special player when it comes to the stage,” NiKo said.
With playoff matches in Astana approaching and the Major season looming, Falcons’ new era under karrigan is now fully underway.
