Monte Upset PARIVISION to Reach ESL Pro League Season 23 Stage 2

Monte shock PARIVISION to reach ESL Pro League Season 23 Stage 2

Monte secured a surprising victory over PARIVISION in the fourth round of ESL Pro League Season 23 Stage 1, winning the best-of-three series 2-1 and advancing to the next stage of the tournament with a 3-1 record. The European squad overcame multiple tense moments—including a map where they squandered seven match points—to close out the series and earn a spot in Stage 2.

The win not only keeps Monte alive in the competition but also grants them additional Valve Regional Standings (VRS) points, improving their chances of qualifying for upcoming major events such as the Cologne Major later in the season.

Tactical approach disrupts PARIVISION

Monte entered the series with a clear tactical plan designed to disrupt PARIVISION’s structure. The team, led in-game by Jack “Gizmy” von Spreckelsen, emphasized utility usage and coordinated pressure early in rounds, particularly on Dust2 where their grenade damage played a significant role in slowing down the Russian side’s executes.

In the opening stages of Dust2, Monte’s utility usage was especially impactful, with Gizmy alone dealing over 500 points of utility damage in the first ten rounds, repeatedly forcing PARIVISION out of their usual setups and disrupting their mid-round calls.

However, the series was far from straightforward. Monte also benefited from several unusual and high-impact moments, including a chaotic clutch situation where Gizmy managed to win a technical 1-versus-5 scenario after a late retake attempt from PARIVISION. Another highlight came from Aurélien “afro” Drapier, who landed a Scout collateral that sparked a comeback from a 6-10 deficit on Mirage.

Mirage start gives Monte early lead

The series began on Mirage, Monte’s map pick, where they managed to grind out a 13-10 victory. Despite competitive halves from both teams, Monte maintained control in key mid-round situations and capitalized on mistakes from the PARIVISION defense.

PARIVISION struggled to fully stabilize their defense and were repeatedly forced into uncomfortable retake situations, allowing Monte to secure the first map and place immediate pressure on their opponents.

PARIVISION survive seven match points on Dust2

The second map, Dust2, became the most dramatic portion of the series. Monte built a strong lead and reached seven separate match points, but repeatedly failed to close out the map despite advantageous positions, including a critical 5v3 situation late in regulation.

With the pressure easing once elimination was imminent, PARIVISION began to regain confidence and momentum. The Russian side mounted a comeback from 6-12 down, forced overtime, and eventually secured the map 19-15, extending the series to a decider.

The comeback highlighted PARIVISION’s resilience, but it also exposed inconsistencies that had already appeared earlier in the event.

Monte dominate the Inferno decider

The deciding map Inferno marked Monte’s first official match on the map in 2026, yet the team showed little hesitation. Exploiting aggressive defensive gambles from PARIVISION, Monte repeatedly attacked weaknesses on the B site, often isolating Emil “nota” Moskvitin during key rounds.

Monte quickly established control with an 8-3 lead, maintaining the advantage through the second half before closing the map 13-7. This time, the European mix avoided the mistakes that cost them Dust2 and secured the series victory.

PARIVISION’s struggles continue

The loss marked another disappointing result for PARIVISION in Stage 1. Just a day earlier, the Russian lineup had already been defeated 2-0 by Legacy, dropping into the 2-1 pool and forcing them to fight for survival in the Swiss stage.

While the roster still displayed flashes of individual skill—such as strong performances from players like Vladislav “xiELO” Lysov—their coordination and late-round decision-making remained inconsistent throughout the tournament.

Monte advance to Stage 2

With the victory, Monte move forward to ESL Pro League Season 23 Stage 2, where 16 teams will compete in a Swiss group stage format for a share of the $185,000 prize pool and qualification to the LAN finals.

For Monte, the upset victory represents a major boost in confidence and ranking potential. For PARIVISION, the defeat raises further questions about the team’s stability after several narrow losses and missed opportunities throughout the event.

If Monte can maintain the structured approach and composure they demonstrated in the decider, they could become one of the dark horses in the next stage of the tournament.
