jL to Stand In for Team Liquid to Help Coach flashie in Key Counter-Strike 2 Tournament

jL confirmed the stand-in appearance on social media, emphasizing that the decision was partly motivated by his long-standing friendship with Liquid head coach Viktor “flashie” Tamás Bea.

“I know how important VRS points are for them right now and I’ll do my absolute best to help my best friend out, flashie.”

flashie publicly thanked the Lithuanian player for agreeing to step in on short notice, welcoming him to the squad for the Portuguese event.

The two previously worked together during flashie’s tenure in NAVI’s coaching staff, where he served as an analyst before later becoming Team Liquid’s head coach in 2025.

Liquid’s Major Qualification Push Intensifies

Team Liquid’s decision to participate in Roman Imperium Cup VI is directly tied to the organization’s attempt to secure enough Valve ranking points for the upcoming Major cycle.

The North American organization recently suffered an early elimination from ESL Pro League Season 23 Stage 1, finishing with a 2-3 record. The result significantly reduced their chances of qualifying for the IEM Cologne 2026 Major.

To recover their position in the rankings, Liquid registered for additional events including:

  • Roman Imperium Cup VI

  • DraculaN Season 6

These tournaments provide smaller but still valuable VRS points that could boost the team’s chances of securing a Major slot.

jL Returns to Competition After NAVI Break

The stand-in role also marks jL’s first notable appearance since stepping away from NAVI’s active roster in July 2025.

At the time, NAVI announced that the player had decided to take a break from professional Counter-Strike to focus on personal well-being.

In a later statement, jL explained that he needed time away from the competitive scene:

“I wasn’t happy playing anymore. I wanted to take time to focus on my life and spend more time with my family.”

His temporary return with Team Liquid therefore represents a rare competitive appearance during his break from full-time professional play.

Another Stand-In Situation for Liquid

The situation adds to a series of roster disruptions for Team Liquid during the 2026 season.

Earlier in the year, the team used Karim “Krimbo” Moussa as a stand-in during IEM Kraków, when veteran player Keith “NAF” Markovic was unable to attend due to personal reasons.

With NertZ unavailable for Roman Imperium Cup VI, Liquid once again turns to an emergency substitute to stabilize the roster.

flashie on Liquid’s Current Form

Team Liquid’s struggles in top-tier Counter-Strike have been acknowledged by coach flashie in previous interviews.

After one of the team’s disappointing tournament runs, he admitted the roster still needs significant improvement:

“Unfortunately, we are not ready to face these teams yet.”

On another occasion, flashie pointed to the team’s mentality issues during difficult matches:

“We were too scared to lose, scared to make mistakes.”

The upcoming event could therefore serve as an important opportunity for Liquid to regain confidence while collecting critical ranking points.

Roman Imperium Cup VI Details

Roman Imperium Cup VI will take place March 12–15 in Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal, at the SAW Esports Arena.

Team Liquid will face several international teams in the group stage, including:

  • BESTIA

  • Gaimin Gladiators

  • OlyBet

  • Famalicão

The tournament has attracted attention from multiple teams seeking valuable VRS ranking points, making it an important event despite its smaller scale.

What jL’s Stand-In Means for Liquid

While jL is not expected to join Team Liquid permanently, his temporary addition gives the team a high-level player already familiar with flashie’s coaching style.

The reunion between the two could help Liquid quickly adapt during the event, which may prove crucial in their ongoing fight to secure Major qualification.

For now, the objective is clear: earn as many ranking points as possible and keep the Major dream alive.
