HooXi reflects on criticism after G2 exit as Astralis secure EPL bronze

HooXi pleased to silence critics after G2 departure as Astralis claim EPL bronze
Rasmus “HooXi” Nielsen says it feels rewarding to prove some critics wrong after his departure from G2, following Astralis’ strong run at ESL Pro League Season 23, where the team secured a bronze medal with a 2–1 victory over FUT in the third-place decider.
The Danish in-game leader spoke to HLTV after the series, reflecting on Astralis’ progress, the team’s early success with a newly formed lineup, and his personal motivation after being written off by many during the later stages of his time in G2.
Astralis secure best result since going international
Astralis’ victory over FUT in the bronze medal match marked the organization’s best finish since transitioning to an international lineup. The win capped off a competitive playoff run and demonstrated encouraging early progress for the roster.
Despite dropping the opening map, Astralis recovered thanks to strong individual performances and composure in key rounds. HooXi highlighted several decisive moments, including impactful CT-side rounds from jabbi and crucial clutch plays from Staehr, which helped the team turn the series around and close it out in their favor.
According to the captain, the victory was the result of collective initiative and confidence within the team.
“It’s showing that we are doing something right… we still have some way to go, especially when it comes to consistency,” HooXi said after the match.
He emphasized that while the roster is still developing, the players are satisfied with their progress so far and are motivated to continue improving.
Managing mood and leadership responsibilities
During the tournament, Astralis’ team communications frequently included reminders to remain calm and avoid tilting in tense situations. HooXi explained that maintaining a positive atmosphere is a major focus for the team, though balancing that with leadership responsibilities can be challenging.
As in-game leader, he must both maintain team morale and address mistakes during matches, which sometimes requires switching between supportive and critical roles.
HooXi noted that Astralis tends to perform best when players are relaxed and enjoying the game, making emotional stability a key factor in their success.
Personal vindication after criticism following G2
Beyond the team’s performance, the event also carried personal significance for HooXi. Toward the end of his tenure with G2, the Danish leader faced heavy criticism and skepticism regarding his impact as an IGL.
After leaving the organization, it took time before he found a new home, with many observers questioning whether he could still lead a competitive roster. Astralis’ recent results, however, have begun to challenge that narrative.
HooXi acknowledged that external criticism is a constant in professional Counter-Strike but admitted it feels satisfying to demonstrate his value again.
“It feels good to prove some of them wrong,” he said, noting that outside opinions will always exist regardless of performance.
The 30-year-old emphasized that he focuses primarily on the work he puts in with the team rather than public perception.
Rebuilding Astralis’ reputation
Another topic discussed in the interview was Astralis’ public image. Over the past years, the organization has at times carried a “villain” reputation in the scene, but recent performances and the arrival of new players appear to be reshaping that perception.
HooXi stressed that the current lineup should not be judged based on past controversies or struggles associated with the brand.
He expressed satisfaction with the growing support from fans and said the team is determined to build a new chapter for Astralis through consistent results and positive energy.
Looking ahead
Although Astralis’ bronze medal marks a promising milestone, HooXi believes the team is still far from its ceiling. Consistency remains the primary focus as the roster continues to develop synergy.
For the Danish captain, the early success of the project also serves as personal validation after a turbulent period following his departure from G2. With Astralis trending upward and the roster gaining experience together, HooXi hopes the team can continue proving doubters wrong in upcoming tournaments.
