FURIA on the Brink of Elimination as ESL Pro League Season 23 Stage 2 Day Two Concludes
The second day of ESL Pro League Season 23 Stage 2 concluded with several major teams edging closer to the playoffs while others now face elimination, with FURIA among the most notable squads struggling after back-to-back defeats.
After two rounds of Swiss-stage play, the Brazilian side sits in the 0-2 pool, meaning they will now have to win three consecutive matches to keep their hopes of reaching the playoffs alive.
Early setback against B8
FURIA’s difficult run began on the opening day of Stage 2 when they suffered a surprising defeat to B8, one of the tournament’s underdogs. The series went the full distance, with the Ukrainian squad eventually securing a 2-1 victory, delivering one of the biggest upsets of the early stage.
Although FURIA managed to dominate Overpass in the series, B8’s strong showings on Mirage and Dust2 ultimately sealed the win and sent the Brazilians into the 0-1 bracket early in the tournament.
3DMAX deepen FURIA’s crisis
Day two brought little relief for the Brazilian squad. Facing 3DMAX in a crucial Swiss round-two matchup between 0-1 teams, FURIA were unable to recover and fell 0-2 in the series.
The French side continued their strong run after qualifying for Stage 2 earlier in the event, building momentum following their Stage 1 success and maintaining solid form against higher-ranked opposition.
With the defeat, FURIA dropped to 0-2, placing them one loss away from elimination in the Swiss format.
Other contenders stumble
FURIA were not the only notable team to struggle during the second day of action. FaZe also slipped into the 0-2 pool after suffering a defeat to paiN, leaving the international lineup in a similarly dangerous position.
However, unlike FURIA, FaZe later managed to recover in an elimination series by defeating Monte 2-0 to keep their tournament hopes alive and remain in the competition.
Swiss stage pressure intensifies
The Stage 2 Swiss format means teams must secure three wins to advance to the playoffs, while three losses result in elimination. As a result, squads sitting at 0-2 now face immediate elimination matches in the next round.
For FURIA, the margin for error has completely disappeared. The team led by FalleN must now begin a reverse-sweep run through the lower bracket if they want to remain in contention for the Pro League title and a spot at the LAN finals.
With the competition intensifying and more elimination matches approaching, the coming rounds will determine whether struggling contenders like FURIA can recover—or whether the tournament will continue producing early surprises in Stage 2.
