FaZe and NIP Secure Opening Wins at Stake Ranked Episode 2 in Barcelona

The second episode of the Stake Ranked tournament series has officially begun in Barcelona, and the opening day already delivered several important storylines for the Counter-Strike scene.
Among the teams that started the event with victories were FaZe Clan and Ninjas in Pyjamas, both securing crucial wins in the upper bracket and moving one step closer toward the playoffs.
Stake Ranked Episode 2 is being held from May 27 to May 30 in Barcelona, Spain, featuring eight teams and a total prize pool of $100,000. The tournament is part of the expanding Stake Ranked circuit organized by StarLadder and Stake, which was officially revealed earlier this spring. The 2026 circuit includes six LAN tournaments spread across the calendar year.
The event gathered several notable organizations, including FaZe, NIP, HEROIC, 3DMAX, Alliance, and 9z. Six teams received direct invitations through the Valve Regional Standings system, while the remaining participants advanced through qualifiers.
FaZe entered the tournament under significant pressure. The roster has experienced a turbulent first half of 2026, struggling to consistently compete for trophies despite occasional deep runs at tier-one events. The organization recently underwent major structural changes following the departure of veteran in-game leader Finn “karrigan” Andersen, with Russel “Twistzz” Van Dulken taking over leadership duties.
That transition has become one of the most discussed narratives around FaZe this season. Twistzz, historically known as one of the world’s most mechanically gifted riflers, has been adapting to the strategic responsibilities of an IGL role while simultaneously trying to maintain his individual level. Analysts and fans have closely followed whether the Canadian star can stabilize the legendary organization during its rebuilding phase.
A successful opening match at Stake Ranked Episode 2 therefore carried extra importance for FaZe. Beyond simply advancing in the bracket, the victory offered the team an opportunity to build momentum after several inconsistent tournament appearances earlier in the year. The squad is also attempting to prove it can remain competitive against both elite opposition and rising tier-two contenders in the increasingly crowded CS2 ecosystem.
Community discussion surrounding the event has also reflected uncertainty regarding FaZe’s current ceiling. On Reddit and HLTV forums, many fans acknowledged the team’s star potential but questioned whether the roster can consistently challenge for championships without additional roster adjustments.
Meanwhile, NIP’s opening victory represented another encouraging sign for a roster that has spent much of the season fighting to regain relevance at the international level. Earlier this year, the Swedish organization already showed flashes of improvement during the first Stake Ranked event, where they managed to secure an important win over Gentle Mates in the battle for Major qualification points.
However, NIP have also struggled with consistency throughout 2026. The team repeatedly came close to deeper playoff runs but often failed in decisive matches. According to previous HLTV interviews and tournament coverage, the roster has frequently lost tight series despite competitive performances, leading to growing frustration within the camp.
Their successful start in Barcelona may therefore become a valuable confidence boost. In a tournament featuring several dangerous opponents and a condensed format, every early victory significantly increases a team’s chances of reaching the latter stages.
Stake Ranked itself is rapidly becoming an increasingly important secondary circuit within Counter-Strike. While the events do not yet carry the prestige of ESL Pro Tour or BLAST Premier tournaments, the series has attracted attention thanks to its LAN format, VRS integration, and growing participation from established organizations.
The first edition of the tournament, held in April, was won by G2 Esports, who defeated the competition to claim the inaugural title. That event also played a role in shaping the Major qualification race and provided valuable ranking points for several organizations.
Now, Episode 2 appears poised to continue that trend. With teams fighting not only for prize money but also for ranking relevance and stability ahead of the summer season, the tournament has quickly evolved into more than just a mid-tier event.
FaZe are widely considered one of the favorites to reach the grand final, especially given the firepower still available within the lineup. Community expectations remain high despite the roster’s inconsistency, with many predicting that the team should at minimum contend for a top-two finish in Barcelona.
At the same time, organizations like NIP, 9z, and Alliance are aiming to disrupt those expectations and capitalize on the unpredictable nature of the current CS2 landscape, where even established giants frequently struggle against disciplined underdogs.
As the tournament progresses, attention will remain focused on whether FaZe’s new leadership structure can finally deliver stability, and whether NIP can convert promising performances into a genuine playoff run. Stake Ranked Episode 2 may not be the biggest tournament of the year, but for several organizations trying to redefine their 2026 campaigns, it could become a pivotal moment in the season.
