BLAST unveils format and details for BLAST Bounty Season 1 2027
BLAST has officially revealed the format and structure for BLAST Bounty Season 1 2027, the tournament that will open the competitive Counter-Strike calendar next year. The event is scheduled to take place from January 11 to January 24, 2027, in Malta, marking the start of the new season with a revamped structure and several significant changes compared to previous editions.
One of the most notable updates is the complete transition to a LAN-only format. Unlike earlier iterations of the tournament, which featured a large online stage followed by an offline final, the 2027 edition will take place entirely on LAN. This change removes the previously used online qualifiers and centralizes all competition at the event location.
The tournament will also feature a reduced team count, shrinking from 32 teams in earlier seasons to 16 participating teams. Despite the smaller field, the event will still offer a $1,250,000 prize pool, continuing BLAST’s approach of launching the season with a high-stakes competition.
New three-stage tournament structure
The 2027 edition introduces a new multi-stage format consisting of three phases: the play-in stage, the last chance qualifier, and the playoffs.
The play-in stage will feature all 16 teams divided into four groups of four. Each group will run a double-elimination bracket, allowing teams more than one opportunity to remain in contention. The winners of each group will qualify directly for the quarter-finals of the playoffs. Meanwhile, the teams finishing second and third will move on to the next stage, while the fourth-place teams in each group will be eliminated from the event.
Teams that finish second or third in their play-in groups will compete in the last chance qualifier, where eight squads will fight for the remaining four playoff spots. Only the winners of those matches will progress further in the tournament, while the losing teams will be eliminated.
The final phase of the competition will be the single-elimination playoff bracket. The playoffs will culminate in a best-of-five grand final, continuing BLAST’s tradition of extended championship matches in its premier events.
Draft mechanics remain part of the tournament
Another defining element of the BLAST Bounty series — the draft system — will remain in place for the 2027 edition.
In the play-in stage, the top four seeded teams will be placed in separate groups, while the remaining participants will select their groups through a drafting process. Interestingly, the lower-seeded teams will pick first, allowing underdogs to decide where they want to compete and potentially create strategic matchups early in the tournament.
Drafting will also play a role later in the event. The teams that win their play-in groups will get the opportunity to choose where the last chance qualifier matches are positioned in the playoff bracket, starting with the highest-ranked seed. This system aims to maintain the strategic layer that has defined the Bounty series since its introduction.
Evolution of the BLAST Bounty series
The BLAST Bounty tournaments have gradually evolved since their introduction. Earlier seasons typically featured large online stages with up to 32 teams, followed by an offline final featuring the top eight squads.
For example, BLAST Bounty 2026 Season 1 started with a 32-team online phase before transitioning to a LAN final in Malta for the remaining eight teams. The 2027 update significantly alters that formula by bringing the entire competition offline and reducing the number of participants.
The shift toward a fully LAN environment reflects a broader trend in top-tier Counter-Strike tournaments, where organizers increasingly prioritize offline competition to ensure competitive integrity and create a stronger live event experience.
Opening the 2027 Counter-Strike season
With its revamped format and high prize pool, BLAST Bounty Season 1 2027 is expected to serve as one of the first major tier-one events of the year, kicking off a packed tournament calendar that includes other high-profile competitions scheduled for early 2027.
The event’s new structure aims to combine strategic drafting mechanics, LAN competition, and a streamlined team lineup to deliver a more intense and viewer-friendly start to the season.
As the competitive scene prepares for another year of Counter-Strike, BLAST’s updated Bounty format could set the tone for how early-season tournaments are structured moving forward.
