5star stun The MongolZ 2-0 to eliminate them from FISSURE Playground 3

5star stun The MongolZ 2-0 to eliminate them from FISSURE Playground 3

5star delivered one of the biggest surprises of FISSURE Playground 3 by sweeping fellow Mongolian side The MongolZ 2-0 in the Group A lower bracket, sending bLitz and company out of the tournament in joint-last place.

The underdogs took Inferno 13-9 before closing the series with a 13-11 victory on Nuke. Tengis "rate" Boldbaatar was the difference-maker for 5star, finishing the two maps with 41 kills, 94.4 ADR and a 1.68 HLTV Rating 3.0.

The result is particularly damaging for The MongolZ given the gap between the teams entering the event. The MongolZ were ranked No. 14 by HLTV compared to 5star at No. 127, but that disparity never translated into control of the server.

5star punish another difficult day for The MongolZ

Both teams entered the series with no margin for error.

5star had been sent into the lower bracket after losing 0-2 to 9z in their opening match, while The MongolZ arrived there following a 1-2 loss to MIBR in which they fell in an overtime deciding map.

The MongolZ were also competing with a changed lineup. Anarbileg "cobrazera" Uuganbayar substituted for Sodbayar "Techno" Munkhbold in Suzhou, joining bLitz, Usukhbayar "910" Banzragch, Dugarsuren "DarkMeister" Ireedui and Zolbayar "tikuak" Chimedtseren.

cobrazera himself was not the problem. He finished the elimination series with 40 kills, 94.1 ADR and a 1.34 rating, almost matching rate's fragging output. The MongolZ simply could not generate enough impact around him.

That imbalance became particularly visible when comparing the bottom of the scoreboards. tikuak finished 18-33 with a 0.64 rating, while DarkMeister recorded a 0.88. On the other side, four 5star players ended the series with ratings above 1.00.

Inferno — 5star turn a halftime deficit into a 13-9 win

5star chose Inferno after removing Dust2, while The MongolZ had taken Anubis out of the pool.

The MongolZ initially looked capable of taking control of their opponent's pick. They reached halftime with a 7-5 advantage, but their grip on the map disappeared after the break.

5star won eight of the following ten rounds to complete a 13-9 turnaround.

rate was already operating at another level, putting up a 22-10 K-D and 1.90 rating on Inferno. Yet even his performance was statistically overshadowed on the losing side by cobrazera, who amassed 28 kills and a 1.82 rating.

That contrast told much of the story: The MongolZ had an individual capable of breaking open rounds, but 5star produced the more functional team performance once the map reached its decisive stage.

Nuke — 5star refuse to let the series escape

Nuke was The MongolZ's selection and represented their opportunity to force an Ancient decider.

Instead, 5star carried their momentum forward.

They took a 7-5 lead into halftime and, unlike The MongolZ on Inferno, never surrendered that advantage. The second half finished 6-6, enough for 5star to secure the map 13-11 and end the series without requiring Ancient.

rate remained 5star's strongest performer, posting 19 kills and a 1.47 rating on the second map.

More importantly, cobrazera could not reproduce his extraordinary Inferno output. After going 28-14 on the opener, he finished Nuke 12-18 with a 0.83 rating. With no second star emerging to compensate, The MongolZ ran out of ways to break 5star's resistance.

Across the entire series, 5star also held a 5-0 advantage in clutches. They recorded 25 opening kills to The MongolZ's 21, another indication that the upset was not simply the product of one fortunate map.

Why this result matters

FISSURE Playground 3 uses two eight-team double-elimination groups, with three teams from each group advancing to the playoffs. Group winners move directly into the semifinals, while the second- and third-placed teams start in the quarterfinals.

For The MongolZ, those possibilities are already gone.

Losses to MIBR and 5star have sent the team home in the 13th-16th-place bracket after just two series. That is an especially sharp fall given that The MongolZ entered the tournament as the highest-profile representative of Mongolian Counter-Strike and the No. 14 team in HLTV's ranking.

The defeat also arrives during a period of substantial roster change. Senzu and mzinho are no longer part of the lineup, while cobrazera replaced Techno for the tournament. The new-look combination showed flashes of individual quality in Suzhou but not enough cohesion to survive two elimination-pressure series.

For 5star, meanwhile, the tournament remains alive.

The Mongolian squad earned its FISSURE Playground 3 place by winning the Asia Closed Qualifier, including a 2-0 victory over Chinggis Warriors in the grand final. Knocking out The MongolZ gives that qualification run considerably more weight.

Head-to-head and Mongolian context

The more relevant historical angle here is not a long-running direct rivalry between these exact lineups, but The MongolZ's dominance over domestic opposition.

HLTV noted that LAN meetings with other Mongolian teams had become relatively rare as The MongolZ spent more time competing internationally. When those meetings did happen, however, bLitz's side had won their previous four LAN encounters against fellow Mongolian opposition since moving under The MongolZ banner.

5star therefore did more than produce a ranking upset. They ended a domestic LAN streak built while The MongolZ established themselves as Mongolia's leading international team.

Given how substantially The MongolZ's roster has changed, older domestic results should not be treated as a direct indicator of the current lineup's strength.

Key players

rate — 5star

rate was the defining player of the series.

His 41-25 record gave him the most kills in the match, while his 94.4 ADR, 78.3% KAST and 1.68 rating separated him from every other 5star player. His 22-10 performance on Inferno was particularly important in transforming a 5-7 halftime deficit into a comfortable map victory.

cobrazera — The MongolZ

The stand-in gave The MongolZ almost everything they could have asked for individually.

cobrazera finished only one kill behind rate at 40-32 and produced 94.1 ADR. His 28 kills on Inferno kept The MongolZ competitive, but his reduced impact on Nuke highlighted how dependent the team had become on him generating openings and multi-kills.

NEUZ — 5star

Uuganbayar "NEUZ" Nyam-Otgon provided the most consistent secondary output behind rate, ending the series 35-31 with 88.5 ADR and a 1.16 rating.

Having multiple reliable contributors proved significant for 5star in a series where The MongolZ's fragging was far more concentrated around cobrazera.

tikuak — The MongolZ

tikuak endured the most difficult match on the server statistically.

The 17-year-old finished 18-33 with 51.0 ADR and a 0.64 rating. With The MongolZ already integrating multiple newer pieces, his struggles placed even more pressure on cobrazera, bLitz and 910 to compensate.

What comes next?

The MongolZ's FISSURE Playground 3 campaign is over, with the team finishing in the joint-last 13th-16th-place bracket.

5star advance deeper into Group A's lower bracket and remain in contention for one of the group's three playoff places. Their next series is scheduled for September 10 in the lower-bracket semifinal, with the exact opponent dependent on the remaining Group A results.

Their margin for error remains zero, but eliminating The MongolZ gives 5star their biggest result of the event and a very different platform from the one they had after their opening defeat to 9z.
