Vitality survive G2 scare to secure BLAST Rivals semi-final spot
Vitality became the first Group A team to move directly into the BLAST Rivals 2026 Season 1 semi-finals after defeating G2 2-1 in the upper-bracket final on April 30. The series was far less straightforward than the final map suggested: Vitality won Mirage 16-13 after overtime, dropped Overpass 11-13, and then closed the match with a dominant 13-3 victory on Dust2.
The result was especially important because of the tournament format. BLAST Rivals features two four-team groups, with group winners advancing directly to the semi-finals, while second- and third-place teams are forced into the quarter-finals. By beating G2, Vitality skipped an extra playoff round; G2, despite a strong performance, had to continue their run from the quarter-finals.
Mirage set the tone for a tense series. Vitality opened with a commanding 10-2 CT half, with flameZ and ZywOo heavily involved in building what looked like a comfortable lead. G2, however, refused to collapse. SunPayus delivered one of the standout individual performances of the match, using the AWP to pull his team back into contention as Vitality’s offense slowed down. G2 eventually forced overtime, but Vitality recovered at the key moment and completed the map 16-13.
Overpass was G2’s best response. They started strongly on the CT side, pressured Vitality’s economy, and continued to punish the world No.1’s more passive moments. Even though Vitality’s stars produced several important mid-round plays, G2 had enough control in the second half to close the map 13-11. MATYS and HeavyGod were also highlighted in HLTV’s report for an important 2v4 that helped G2 secure the map.
The decider, Dust2, was completely different. After two close maps, G2 could not keep the same level. Vitality took control immediately, posted a 9-3 first half, and won four straight rounds after the side switch to finish the map 13-3. ZywOo was the best-rated player of the series with 56 kills, 81.6 ADR, 76.8% KAST, and a 1.34 rating, while SunPayus led G2 with 52 kills and a 1.16 rating.
The win also fit into Vitality’s broader Fort Worth storyline. Their opening match against FUT had already been described as shaky, with Vitality needing three maps to overcome a FUT lineup playing with coach coolio as a stand-in for lauNX. Against G2, they again showed vulnerable moments, but their late-series composure and Dust2 strength were enough to secure the direct semi-final berth.
For G2, the match was both encouraging and costly. They pushed Vitality across the first two maps and had SunPayus in excellent form, but the collapse on Dust2 meant they lost the chance to avoid the quarter-finals. Their campaign ended one round later, when FaZe defeated them 2-1 in the playoff quarter-finals to reach the semi-finals in Fort Worth.
Vitality’s victory helped shape the playoff bracket: they moved directly into the semi-finals, while NAVI also earned a direct semi-final place from the other group. The bracket later set up Vitality against GamerLegion, after GamerLegion beat Astralis 2-0 in the quarter-finals, while NAVI faced FaZe on the other side.
