Team Spirit to Play IEM Rio and PGL Astana Without Coach hally

Team Spirit will be forced to compete without their head coach Sergey “hally” Shavaev at two upcoming tier-one events, as the organization confirmed that he will miss both IEM Rio and PGL Astana due to health-related reasons.

According to the official announcement, the decision was made to allow the 32-year-old coach to focus on recovery and return in optimal condition ahead of preparations for the IEM Cologne Major, one of the most important tournaments of the season. The organization emphasized that this is a temporary measure aimed at ensuring hally can fully regain his strength before the team enters the most crucial stage of the competitive calendar.

In his absence, Team Spirit will be led by Dmitry “S0tF1k” Forostyanko, the current coach of Spirit Academy. The stand-in coach is not an unfamiliar figure within the system: he has previously worked closely with several members of the main roster, including rising star Danil “donk” Kryshkovets and Myroslav “zont1x” Plakhotia, before both players were promoted to the senior squad in 2023. This continuity is expected to ease the transition and maintain stability during hally’s temporary leave.

The timing of this change presents an additional challenge for Spirit, as the team approaches two significant international events. IEM Rio is scheduled to take place from April 13 to April 19, followed by PGL Astana from May 9 to May 17. Both tournaments serve as key opportunities for teams to refine their form and secure strong results ahead of the Cologne Major.

Spirit’s current lineup — featuring donk, Dmitry “sh1ro” Sokolov, Boris “magixx” Vorobiev, Myroslav “zont1x” Plakhotia, and Andrey “tN1R” Tatarinovich — will therefore compete under altered coaching leadership during this period. Despite the absence of their head coach, the roster remains unchanged, and the organization appears confident in its ability to remain competitive.

Recent results suggest that the team may benefit from additional stability during this stretch. Spirit most recently participated in BLAST Open Rotterdam, where they suffered a group-stage elimination after losses to PARIVISION and The MongolZ. This marked the first time this season that the squad failed to reach the playoffs, interrupting an otherwise consistent run that included top-eight finishes at BLAST Bounty and ESL Pro League Season 23 Finals, as well as a third-place finish at IEM Kraków.

The temporary coaching change comes at a pivotal moment in Spirit’s season. Over the past year, the team has established itself as one of the strongest contenders in the global Counter-Strike scene, highlighted by their victory at the Perfect World Shanghai Major 2024. That success elevated expectations for the roster, particularly with standout performances from players like donk and sh1ro, who have been central to the team’s rise.

Hally himself has been a key figure in that success. Known for his tactical approach and effective use of timeouts, he has played a crucial role in shaping Spirit’s identity and strategic depth. His absence, even temporarily, could impact the team’s in-game decision-making and adaptability — areas where coaching influence is often most visible.

However, the organization’s decision to prioritize his health reflects a long-term perspective. By ensuring that their head coach can return fully prepared for the Cologne Major, Spirit is aiming to preserve its peak potential for the most important competitions of the year.

While S0tF1k’s appointment is described as a short-term solution, it also represents an opportunity for the academy coach to prove himself on the big stage. Given his prior experience with the team’s core players and reputation within the academy system, his integration is expected to be relatively seamless.

Ultimately, Team Spirit will enter IEM Rio and PGL Astana in a slightly altered configuration, balancing immediate competitive goals with long-term priorities. Their performance at these events will not only test the depth of their system but also indicate how well the team can adapt without one of its key strategic leaders.
