Spirit end Vitality losing streak as donk powers EWC 2026 semifinal run

Spirit finally found a way past Vitality.

Danil "donk" Kryshkovets produced another statement playoff performance as Spirit defeated Vitality 2-1 in the Esports World Cup 2026 quarter-finals, taking Anubis 13-11, dropping an overtime Nuke 14-16, and then dismantling their opponents 13-3 on Mirage. The victory sent Spirit into the semi-finals and ended a six-series losing streak against Vitality stretching back to October 2024.

The first two maps were separated by almost nothing. The decider was different. donk went 20-5 in the opening half of Mirage as Spirit built a 9-3 advantage and never gave Vitality a route back into the series. He finished the match with 70 kills, 101.0 ADR and a 1.46 rating, comfortably leading the server.

Spirit's reward is a semi-final against Legacy, who produced an upset of their own by eliminating reigning IEM Cologne Major champions Falcons 2-0.

What Happened?

Spirit entered the quarter-final with a considerable amount of history working against them. Vitality had won their previous six series against Spirit, including the IEM Rio 2026 grand final, where apEX's team swept them 3-0. This time, Spirit were able to stay alive through two tight maps before completely taking control of the decider.

Anubis immediately showed that Spirit were not going to play the series on Vitality's terms. donk opened with a USP triple, although Vitality answered with an eco conversion and prevented their opponents from building an early lead.

The teams reached halftime level at 6-6, but Spirit's T side gave them separation. A five-round run pushed them towards map point before Vitality narrowed the gap through ZywOo and mezii. Spirit still avoided overtime, with tN1R finding the closing triple to secure their pick 13-11.

Nuke followed the opposite pattern. Vitality raced into a 7-1 advantage on their T side, forcing Spirit to spend most of the map recovering from a poor start. Spirit did exactly that, first limiting the halftime damage and then mounting another comeback after ZywOo's four-kill pistol round.

Vitality reached four map points, yet Spirit dragged the game into overtime. That recovery ultimately went unrewarded. flameZ supplied a critical 1v3 and Vitality closed out their own pick 16-14 to force Mirage.

There was no comparable fight on the third map.

Mirage — Spirit win 13-3

The defining stretch of the entire series belonged to donk.

Spirit's star rifler tore through Vitality for 20 kills and only five deaths in the first half, almost single-handedly turning Mirage into a one-sided decider. Spirit went into the break 9-3 ahead, leaving Vitality needing an immediate response after the side switch.

It never came.

Spirit quickly reached series point and even recovered a 3v5 in the closing round to complete the 13-3 victory. After nearly 60 rounds of competitive Counter-Strike across Anubis and Nuke, Mirage lasted only 16.

The contrast was particularly stark at the top and bottom of the scoreboards. donk finished the series at 70-43 with a 1.46 rating, while tN1R added 63 kills and a 1.21 rating. sh1ro was also consistently efficient at 46-38 and 1.18. Vitality, meanwhile, had no player above flameZ's 1.15 rating, while apEX endured a difficult series statistically at 27-60 and 0.52.

Why This Match Matters

The result carries more weight for Spirit than a standard quarter-final victory.

Vitality had become one of their most difficult opponents. Spirit's previous victory in the matchup dated back to 2024, and the run since then included defeats at several major LAN events. Their most recent meeting before Riyadh was especially painful: Vitality won the IEM Rio 2026 grand final 3-0, taking Mirage, Nuke and Dust2.

Spirit therefore did more than reach another semi-final. They removed a matchup that had repeatedly stopped them during the previous two seasons.

The win also continued a strong recovery during EWC. Spirit opened the tournament with a 10-13 loss to JiJieHao, but responded by beating Luminosity, BIG and B8 before taking down Vitality. They are now on a four-match winning run at the event.

Vitality leave Riyadh with a much less convincing picture. They had beaten FaZe 2-0 in the Round of 16, but their tournament also included a group-stage defeat to B8 before the quarter-final exit.

Spirit's drought against Vitality was one of the central storylines coming into the series.

sh1ro — Spirit

sh1ro did not need to dominate the scoreboard. His 46-38 K-D, 78.6% KAST and 1.18 rating provided Spirit with stability across a series that included several long economic battles and an overtime map.

flameZ — Vitality

flameZ was Vitality's highest-rated player at 1.15 and delivered one of their most important individual moments with the 1v3 on Nuke. It helped Vitality complete the 16-14 overtime win and keep the series alive.

Spirit will face Legacy in the Esports World Cup 2026 semi-finals on August 22. The match is another best-of-three, with a place in Sunday's grand final on the line.

Legacy reached the final four by defeating Falcons 2-0, winning Mirage 13-7 and Dust2 13-10. The Brazilian core therefore enters the match having already eliminated the reigning IEM Cologne Major champions.
