saffee leads paiN to dominant win over FaZe in IEM Atlanta 2026 opener

saffee leads paiN to dominant win over FaZe in IEM Atlanta 2026 opener
Brazilian AWPer Rafael “saffee” Costa enjoyed a dream return to competitive Counter-Strike 2 as paiN Gaming stunned FaZe with a convincing 2-0 victory at IEM Atlanta 2026. The Brazilian side secured wins on Dust2 (13-6) and Anubis (13-8), eliminating one of the tournament favorites from their opening match in Group A.
The result marked saffee’s first official series since August 2025 and immediately reignited discussion around paiN’s potential heading into the second half of the 2026 CS2 season.
saffee says victory over FaZe “feels good”
Speaking to HLTV after the match, saffee admitted the win carried extra significance because of the opponent and the circumstances surrounding his return.
“It feels good to have such a good victory against such a good team,” saffee told HLTV.
The 31-year-old sniper recently rejoined paiN Gaming after replacing Lucas “nqz” Soares, who stepped away from competition due to personal reasons. According to saffee, the team had only practiced together for around two weeks before IEM Atlanta, but early signs were already encouraging.
He also explained that returning to competition reminded him how much he missed playing official matches, traveling with teammates, and representing paiN on stage again.
paiN outclass FaZe despite losing every pistol round
One of the most surprising aspects of the series was paiN’s dominance outside of pistol rounds. FaZe won all four pistols across Dust2 and Anubis, yet still failed to gain control of either map.
paiN repeatedly shut down FaZe in rifle rounds with aggressive mid-round calls and confident trading. João “snow” Vinicius delivered one of the best performances of his career, finishing the series with a 1.47 rating, while Guilherme “piriajr” Barbosa posted a 1.40 rating.
saffee himself finished with a solid 1.02 rating in his first official appearance back on the server.
The victory instantly became one of the biggest upsets of IEM Atlanta 2026 so far and raised new questions around FaZe’s consistency following recent roster changes and uneven results throughout the season.
biguzera highlights paiN’s confidence on Anubis
paiN captain Rodrigo “biguzera” Bittencourt later revealed that Anubis had been one of the team’s strongest maps during practice leading into the event.
That confidence translated directly into the server as paiN controlled the pace throughout their T side and consistently punished FaZe’s defensive setups. The Brazilian squad looked comfortable in late-round situations and showed far better coordination than many expected from a recently adjusted lineup.
The performance also continued paiN’s strong reputation as one of the most dangerous Brazilian CS2 teams outside the elite top-five conversation.
Twistzz calls FaZe performance “abysmal”
FaZe star Russel “Twistzz” Van Dulken did not hide his frustration after the loss. In post-match comments, the Canadian described FaZe’s showing as “abysmal” and pointed to poor communication and a lack of initiative across the team.
The defeat overshadowed some of the optimism FaZe had generated after improved performances earlier in the summer, including signs of recovery at BLAST Rivals.
Instead, the loss against paiN restarted concerns surrounding the team’s long-term stability and ability to compete consistently against aggressive international opposition in CS2.
saffee’s return to paiN after MIBR bench period
Before rejoining paiN, saffee spent several months inactive on MIBR’s bench. During his interview, he explained that he initially used the break to focus on family before gradually preparing for a return to professional play later in 2025.
His comeback also represents a reunion with the organization where he originally established himself as one of Brazil’s top AWPers before later moving to FURIA and MIBR.
For longtime Brazilian Counter-Strike fans, saffee’s return to paiN adds experience and leadership to a roster already known for its aggressive style and emotional energy.
paiN prepare for FUT clash at IEM Atlanta 2026
Following the upset victory over FaZe, paiN advanced to face FUT Esports in the next stage of Group A. FUT also opened their campaign with a strong 2-0 win over NRG.
FUT captain Aulon “Krabeni” Fazlija praised paiN ahead of the matchup, noting that Brazilian teams become especially dangerous once they build momentum during an event.
With confidence rapidly growing inside the camp, paiN now have an opportunity to establish themselves as one of the surprise contenders of IEM Atlanta 2026.
Why paiN’s win matters for the CS2 scene
paiN’s victory over FaZe was more than a single upset. It highlighted the growing depth of Brazilian Counter-Strike and showed how quickly experienced veterans like saffee can reshape a roster.
The result also gives paiN valuable momentum ahead of upcoming international events, including the CS Asia Championships and preparations for the IEM Cologne Major cycle.
If the chemistry between saffee, snow, and biguzera continues to improve, paiN could become one of the most dangerous dark-horse teams in CS2 during the remainder of the 2026 season.
