s1mple’s Early Career Personality Revealed by Markeloff: “He Needed to Be Calmer”
Former Yegor Markelov has shared new insights into the early career of Oleksandr Kostyliev, highlighting both his extraordinary skill and the challenges of playing alongside him in his teenage years.
The comments, featured in a Hall of Fame interview on HLTV, shed light on how one of the greatest players in Counter-Strike history developed from a raw prodigy into a more mature competitor.
Markeloff on Young s1mple: Talent vs Temper
According to markeloff, s1mple stood out immediately when they played together in teams like HellRaisers and FlipSid3 Tactics during 2014–2015.
“He was much better than all of us at the time,” markeloff explained.
However, that individual dominance came with emotional intensity that often disrupted team chemistry.
“I told him he needed to be calmer and respect his teammates… I knew he was young, around 17, and thought it was just a phase.”
This period became one of the most talked-about chapters in early Counter-Strike: Global Offensive history, as s1mple’s behavior sparked debates across the competitive scene.
FlipSid3 Drama and Public Criticism
Tensions reached a peak after ESWC 2015, where FlipSid3 achieved a strong 3rd–4th place finish. Despite the result, s1mple publicly criticized his teammates, suggesting roster changes.
At the time, markeloff openly addressed the situation:
“He was yelling and arguing all the time… it damaged our team chemistry a lot.”
These moments cemented s1mple’s early reputation as a difficult but incredibly gifted player.
From Toxic Prodigy to CS Legend
Despite early criticism, markeloff never doubted s1mple’s potential:
“He had godlike aim… an outstanding player.”
That potential was eventually realized, as s1mple went on to become one of the most dominant players in Counter-Strike history, widely considered the GOAT of Counter-Strike.
s1mple in 2026: A More Mature Competitor
Now playing for BC.Game Esports in the Counter-Strike 2 era, s1mple shows a noticeably different mindset.
“When we’ve been together for one or two months, I’ll be more comfortable… my game will be sharper.”
His current focus on team chemistry and long-term improvement reflects the growth markeloff predicted years ago.
