molodoy embraces responsibility as FalleN enters final year of legendary career

Danil “molodoy” Golubenko says his focus in 2026 is no longer only on individual impact, but on helping FURIA become a more complete team — and giving Gabriel “FalleN” Toledo the strongest possible final chapter of his playing career.

The Kazakh AWPer spoke to HLTV during BLAST Rivals 2026 Season 1 media day in Fort Worth, shortly after FalleN confirmed at IEM Rio that he would retire from professional play at the end of 2026. The announcement came on stage at Farmasi Arena in Rio de Janeiro, where the Brazilian icon said he had “247 more days” left as a player and planned to remain connected to Counter-Strike after stepping away from competition.

For molodoy, the news carries a personal weight. FalleN was central to bringing him into FURIA and helped guide him through the transition into an international roster, a new language environment, and a different role structure. The 21-year-old described FalleN as almost a father figure in Counter-Strike, saying that the veteran had supported him heavily since his arrival.

Rather than treating the retirement announcement as a distraction, molodoy framed it as motivation. He said there is little he can do about FalleN’s decision except take more responsibility, improve his own work inside the team, and try to help the Brazilian captain win more tournaments before the end of the year.

That mindset also reflects a wider change in molodoy’s own approach. After a spectacular rookie season in 2025, he admitted that his second year at the top level has required a different mentality. In his first months with FURIA, he often relied on instinct and individual plays. Now, he says he is trying to rebuild parts of his game around the team system rather than personal numbers.

The shift comes after a breakout year in which molodoy quickly became one of the most talked-about young players in Counter-Strike. HLTV named him Rookie of the Year for 2025 after he joined FURIA in April, averaged a 1.17 rating across the year, helped the team win FISSURE Playground 2, Thunderpick World Championship, IEM Chengdu, and BLAST Rivals Season 2, and earned MVP awards at FISSURE Playground 2 and IEM Chengdu.

FURIA’s late-2025 run was especially important in changing outside expectations. The team reverse-swept NAVI 3-2 to win Thunderpick World Championship 2025, with molodoy and YEKINDAR taking over on the final maps, and then secured a major statement title at IEM Chengdu by beating Vitality 3-0 in the grand final. ESL also confirmed that FURIA’s Chengdu win was their first-ever Intel Extreme Masters trophy, with molodoy receiving the DHL MVP award.

But 2026 has not been as straightforward. FURIA reached the semi-finals at IEM Rio, where they lost 2-0 to Vitality despite strong support from the Brazilian crowd. The defeat underlined the challenge ahead: FURIA remain dangerous, but the level at the top of CS2 is unforgiving, especially with teams such as Vitality, NAVI, Spirit, and Falcons in the title race.

molodoy’s answer is not to chase last year’s form by repeating the same style. Instead, he believes the next step is becoming more useful within FURIA’s structure. He said individual performance means less if it does not lead to trophies, and that Counter-Strike must ultimately be approached as a team game.

That evolution is also tied to communication. Looking back on his debut period, molodoy said that during his first tournament he could not understand much of what was happening in-game and often played by feel. A year later, he says his English is stronger and he understands FURIA’s system better, allowing him to respond more clearly to what teammates need from him.

FURIA’s next test at BLAST Rivals begins against GamerLegion, a match molodoy refused to call easy. He warned that in CS2, any strong opponent can punish mistakes, and said FURIA are not entering the event with loud declarations about winning the trophy. Their stated goal is simpler: keep improving, stay focused, and solve problems quickly enough to make deep tournament runs.

For FalleN, 2026 is the closing stretch of one of Counter-Strike’s most influential careers. For molodoy, it is a chance to prove that his Rookie of the Year season was not a one-off peak, but the beginning of a more mature phase. If FURIA are to send their captain out with another trophy, the young AWPer’s adaptation may be one of the decisive factors.
