Underdogs magic pulled off one of the biggest surprises of PGL Astana 2026 after defeating Gentle Mates 2-0 to secure a playoff spot at the tournament in Kazakhstan.

The CIS lineup completed an incredible reverse run through the Swiss stage, recovering from a disastrous 0-2 start to finish with a 3-2 record and qualify for the playoffs in front of a local crowd at Barys Arena. The victory marks the biggest achievement in the organization’s Counter-Strike history so far.

magic looked close to elimination after opening losses against The MongolZ and Monte. However, the squad responded with consecutive victories over K27, HEROIC, and Gentle Mates to complete a remarkable comeback run.

The playoff qualification is especially meaningful for Kazakh player Abdurakhim “mo0N” Issa, who will now compete on stage in front of home fans.

“It means a lot for me. From 0-2 to 3-2 is amazing. I'm playing in my country, in the arena, and I have a lot of support,” mo0N told HLTV after the match.

The emotional storyline has quickly made magic one of the fan-favorite teams heading into the playoff stage of PGL Astana 2026.

MaSvAl Leads magic Past Gentle Mates

Svyatoslav “MaSvAl” Masko delivered the best performance of the series, finishing with 44 kills, 100 ADR, and a dominant 1.67 rating. Vitaliy “sFade8” Marushka and Andrey “AW” Anisimov also played key roles during the victory.

Mirage was largely one-sided, with magic controlling the pace from the start. Inferno proved much closer, as Gentle Mates pushed the series into overtime before magic closed out the map in dramatic fashion.

Gentle Mates entered the elimination match after suffering a difficult loss against FURIA in the previous Swiss round. The Brazilian side secured its own playoff berth after winning the decider on Inferno, helped by clutch plays from Danil “molodoy” Golubenko and veteran AWPer Gabriel 'FalleN' Toledo.

HEROIC Also Eliminated During Swiss Stage

One of the biggest surprises of the tournament came earlier when magic defeated HEROIC in another elimination series. HEROIC had shown promise early in the event and were considered favorites to advance.

Before the loss, HEROIC player Christoffer “Chr1zN” Storgaard spoke positively about the team’s recent progress.

“Now that there is a bit more calm and everyone has gotten the month to practice and actually feel each other out, it's going to be much better,” Chr1zN said in an interview with HLTV.

Despite those expectations, HEROIC failed to reach the playoffs after the upset defeat.
