M80 sweep Luminosity to win Roman Imperium Cup VIII

M80 avenged their only defeat at Roman Imperium Cup VIII by beating Luminosity 2-0 in the grand final, closing out two competitive maps 13-10 to lift the trophy in Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal.
The North American organization had lost 1-2 to Luminosity in the upper-bracket final earlier on Sunday but responded by sweeping Iberian Soul in the consolidation final before overcoming Luminosity on Dust2 and Cache.
Fritz “slaxz-” Dietrich led M80 statistically with a 1.17 rating, 35-22 K-D record and 80.4% KAST. The victory earned M80 the $6,968 first-place prize and, according to HLTV, a 17-position gain in the Valve Regional Standings. It is their third LAN trophy of 2026 after victories at fl0m Mythical LAN and DraculaN Season 6.
M80 turn an upper-bracket defeat into a title run
The final was a rematch of the upper-bracket decider played only hours earlier. M80 had taken the opening map of that series 13-11 on Dust2 but were reverse-swept after losing Mirage 7-13 and Inferno 6-13.
That defeat sent M80 into a consolidation match against Iberian Soul, whom they had already beaten 2-0 in the upper bracket. The second meeting was even more controlled: M80 won Inferno 13-7 and Cache 13-5 to book another opportunity against Luminosity.
Luminosity arrived in the final undefeated, although their route had been far less comfortable. They required three maps against LP, SAW and M80, building a 3-0 series record but dropping a map in every match.
| Team | Opponent | Result | Stage |
|---|---|---|---|
| M80 | 6666 | 2-1 | Upper-bracket quarter-final |
| M80 | Iberian Soul | 2-0 | Upper-bracket semi-final |
| M80 | Luminosity | 1-2 | Upper-bracket final |
| M80 | Iberian Soul | 2-0 | Consolidation final |
| Luminosity | LP | 2-1 | Upper-bracket quarter-final |
| Luminosity | SAW | 2-1 | Upper-bracket semi-final |
| Luminosity | M80 | 2-1 | Upper-bracket final |
M80 entered the title match with an 7-3 map record and improved it to 9-3 with the sweep. Luminosity, meanwhile, finished the tournament with six map wins and five losses.
Dust2 swings away from Luminosity after halftime
Luminosity selected Dust2 despite losing it 11-13 in the teams’ first meeting. M80 had also played the map in their opening series, defeating 6666 13-6, so neither team entered the final without recent information on the other’s approach.
The rematch remained level through the opening half at 6-6. Luminosity’s Lucas “lux” Meneghini and Oscar “AZUWU” Bell produced the stronger raw fragging numbers, but M80 were better at converting the second half, winning seven of the final 11 rounds for another 13-10 victory.
Michael “Swisher” Schmid was M80’s driving force on the opener. He finished with 20 kills, ten deaths, 97.0 ADR and a 1.41 rating. Mason “Lake” Sanderson added 20 kills and an 85.9 ADR, while Elias “s1n” Stein contributed a 1.15 rating and an 87.0% KAST.
Luminosity had two players above M80’s highest-rated performer: AZUWU posted a 1.28 rating and lux recorded 22 kills with a 1.18. However, the difference lower down the scoreboard was substantial. Rainwaker managed only six kills and a 0.51 rating, leaving Luminosity without enough distributed firepower to turn their strong individual performances into a map win.

M80 erase a 5-7 deficit on Cache
M80 changed their own selection from Mirage—the map they had lost in the upper final—to Cache. The adjustment was backed by their tournament results: they had already beaten Iberian Soul 13-5 on Cache twice, including once in the consolidation final immediately before the title match.
Luminosity removed Cache in the earlier series, but allowed it through in the grand-final veto after choosing to ban Inferno instead.
The decision initially worked for them. Luminosity led 7-5 at halftime, putting themselves six rounds away from forcing Ancient. M80 then took control, winning eight of the next 11 rounds to close the map 13-10 and avoid a decider.
s1n stepped forward with 20 kills, 88.3 ADR and a 1.48 rating, his best map of the final. JBa also recovered from a quiet Dust2, rising from a 0.74 rating on the opener to 1.47 on Cache. His 16-17 K-D record was unremarkable in isolation, but his positive HLTV Swing figure and 79.6 ADR reflected a considerably more influential second map.
slaxz- supplied the consistency around those changing contributors. M80’s AWPer recorded a 1.03 rating on Dust2 and improved to 1.31 on Cache, finishing the series with 13 more kills than deaths and the joint-best KAST in the match.
For Luminosity, the second-half collapse exposed the same lack of depth seen on Dust2. lux remained competitive with a 1.07 rating, but AZUWU fell from 1.28 to 0.92. Rainwaker and yxngstxr again finished below 0.75 as M80 pulled away.

Statistics use HLTV Rating 3.0 and cover both maps of the grand final.
The table captures the key difference between the finalists. Luminosity’s best two riflers narrowly outperformed most of M80, but their production fell sharply through the rest of the lineup. M80 placed four players at 1.05 or higher, while slaxz- provided stability across both maps and different teammates took over offensively.
The result also showed M80’s ability to correct problems within the same day. They removed Mirage from the grand-final veto after losing it to Luminosity and returned to Cache, where their preparation had already produced two comfortable victories. They also reversed the matchup despite playing two additional maps in the consolidation final.
M80 leave Portugal with the title, a 4-1 series record and their third LAN trophy of the year. Their next scheduled appearance is Logitech G Play Connect in Warsaw on September 17, giving the team only a short turnaround before returning to competition.
