M80 beat NRG in North American derby to reach IEM Cologne Major Stage 2

M80 booked their place in Stage 2 of the IEM Cologne Major 2026 after defeating NRG 2-0 in a North American derby in Swiss round four. The match was an advancement series for teams sitting at 2-1, meaning the winner moved on to the next stage, while the loser was sent into the final 2-2 round with one more chance to survive. M80 closed the series on Ancient and Inferno, winning 13-6 and 13-10 respectively.
The result came one day after M80 had missed their first chance to qualify. In the 2-0 pool, they lost to B8 in a tight best-of-three where both maps were competitive: Ancient ended 13-11 for B8, and Inferno went all the way to overtime before B8 edged it 22-20. That defeat made the NRG match a pressure test for M80, but they responded with a far more controlled performance.
The series opened on Ancient, NRG’s pick. M80 started well on the CT side, but NRG found a way back into the half after Michael “Grim” Wince delivered a 1v3 clutch. Even so, M80 stayed ahead 7-5 at the break and took full control after switching sides. Mason “Lake” Sanderson was one of the key figures in the second half, producing high-impact rifle rounds as M80 ran away with the map 13-6.
Inferno was more dangerous for M80. NRG put together a strong CT half and led 8-4, while Michael “Swisher” Schmid’s Tec-9 entries helped keep M80 from falling too far behind. Once the sides switched, however, M80’s defense became the deciding factor. They recovered immediately after losing the pistol round and won nine of the final eleven rounds to complete the comeback, taking Inferno 13-10 and the series 2-0.
M80’s victory was built on a balanced trio of strong performances. Josh “JBa” Barutt finished as the team’s highest-rated player with a 1.46 Rating 3.0, 35-20 K-D, 83.6 ADR, and 85.7% KAST. Swisher followed closely with a 1.42 rating, while Lake posted 89.4 ADR and a 1.33 rating across the two maps. Grim was NRG’s best performer statistically, ending the series with 32 kills and a 1.24 rating, but NRG lacked enough support around him to extend the match to Mirage.
The wider context made the derby especially important for both sides. Stage 1 of the Cologne Major uses a 16-team Swiss format, with eight teams advancing to Stage 2. Advancement and elimination matches are played as best-of-three series, while the other matches are best-of-one. M80 and NRG entered the fourth round alongside MIBR and Lynn Vision in the 2-1 pool, all fighting for direct qualification.
For M80, the win secured immediate progress and allowed them to avoid the volatility of the 2-2 decider. For NRG, the loss meant their Major run came down to one final series. They later faced BIG in round five, where BIG completed a dramatic comeback on Mirage after trailing 0-12, winning the series 2-1 and eliminating NRG from the tournament.
M80’s reward was a place in Stage 2, where stronger opposition entered the tournament. HLTV’s Stage 2 opening matchups listed M80 against G2 on June 6, with teams such as Spirit, Legacy, Astralis, GamerLegion, paiN, TYLOO, B8, and others also joining or continuing in the competition.
The win over NRG therefore did more than settle a regional rivalry. It showed that M80 could rebound quickly after a painful loss to B8, handle pressure in a qualification match, and rely on multiple players rather than one standout performance. With JBa, Swisher, and Lake all delivering in key moments, M80 earned their Stage 2 spot with one of their most convincing showings of the opening stage.
