IEM Atlanta 2026: North American Teams Crash Into Lower Bracket After Brutal Opening Day
North American Counter-Strike suffered a disastrous start at IEM Atlanta 2026 as every team with North American representation was sent to the lower bracket after the opening round of matches.
Teams including FaZe, Liquid, NRG, M80, and Passion UA all lost their first series of the tournament, leaving the region on the brink of early elimination. The rough start immediately sparked discussions across the CS2 community about the current state of North American Counter-Strike and whether the region can still compete consistently against Europe and South America at tier-one events.
According to HLTV’s tournament coverage, all five squads failed to secure an upper-bracket victory during the first day of play in Atlanta.
FaZe Eliminated From Upper Bracket by paiN Gaming
The biggest surprise of the day came when paiN Gaming dominated FaZe in a convincing 2-0 series victory.
Despite winning all four pistol rounds, FaZe struggled to convert momentum into rounds. paiN secured a commanding 13-6 victory on Dust2 before closing out Anubis 13-8.
Brazilian talents João “snow” Vinicius and Guilherme “piriajr” Barbosa played key roles in the upset win, consistently shutting down FaZe’s mid-round executions.
Following the loss, FaZe star Russel “Twistzz” Van Dulken openly criticized the team’s performance on social media:
“Abysmal game from us. Low comms. Low initiative. Bad stuff. Need to step up for tomorrow.”
The defeat continues a difficult transitional period for FaZe after Finn “karrigan” Andersen’s departure earlier this year. In a recent HLTV interview, karrigan admitted his final months with the roster were “really rough” before joining Falcons.
Liquid Lose to Astralis in IEM Atlanta Opener
Team Liquid also fell into the lower bracket after a tough 0-2 defeat against Astralis.
Astralis looked sharp throughout the series, taking Dust2 13-4 before narrowly closing Ancient 13-11. Jakob “jabbi” Nygaard delivered one of the strongest individual performances of the day with a 1.68 rating.
Liquid’s inconsistent form has become a recurring concern in recent international events, especially against structured European opposition.
NRG Fail to Capitalize Against FUT
NRG pushed FUT Esports to overtime on Ancient but ultimately lost 13-16 after failing to close several late-round advantages.
The Turkish side then secured Overpass 13-9 to complete the sweep and advance in the upper bracket.
While NRG showed flashes of promise, their inability to convert crucial rounds once again highlighted the gap between North American teams and more experienced international rosters.
M80 Swept by Legacy
Another disappointing result for North America came when M80 lost 0-2 to Brazilian side Legacy.
Legacy controlled the pace throughout the series, winning Inferno 13-5 and Mirage 13-7. Guilherme “saadzin” Pacheco dominated statistically with 102.5 ADR and a 1.68 rating.
The result adds further momentum to the growing Brazilian presence at international CS2 tournaments, where South American teams continue to outperform expectations.
Passion UA Nearly Upset NAVI
Although technically a Ukrainian organization, Passion UA feature North American representation and nearly produced one of the biggest upsets of the event against Natus Vincere.
Passion UA opened Anubis with a dominant 9-3 CT half before NAVI mounted a comeback to win the map in overtime. NAVI then comfortably secured Mirage 13-4 to finish the series 2-0.
The close call demonstrated both Passion UA’s potential and NAVI’s ability to recover under pressure.
North American Teams Face Elimination at IEM Atlanta 2026
The lower bracket now sets up multiple elimination matches involving North American teams:
FaZe vs NRG
Liquid vs M80
Passion UA vs SINNERS
With no margin for error remaining, the next round could determine whether North America has any realistic chance of a deep playoff run at IEM Atlanta 2026.
