FURIA overturn two deficits to eliminate Aurora and reach EWC quarter-finals

FURIA survived two major deficits against Aurora to claim a 2-1 victory in the Esports World Cup 2026 Round of 16, recovering on both Ancient and Mirage to keep their run alive in Paris.
Gabriel "FalleN" Toledo's side took Aurora's Ancient pick 13-11 despite trailing 4-8 at halftime, lost a tense Nuke 14-16 in overtime, and then produced the defining stretch of the series on Mirage. Down 3-9 at the break, FURIA won ten consecutive CT rounds without reply to close the decider 13-9.
The result eliminated Aurora from the single-elimination playoffs and moved FURIA into an August 20 quarter-final against G2. FURIA entered the match ranked No. 3 on HLTV, while Aurora were No. 8.

The match was played on August 19 as part of the EWC playoffs in Paris. Aurora picked Ancient, FURIA selected Nuke, and Mirage was left as the decider after Inferno, Anubis, Dust2 and Cache were removed during the veto.
What Happened?
Aurora had several opportunities to take control of the series, but FURIA were markedly stronger after the side switches on both maps they eventually won.
Ancient initially belonged to Aurora. A four-kill pistol round from Ali "Wicadia" Haydar Yalçın helped them establish an early lead, and they carried an 8-4 advantage into halftime. FURIA's response came immediately on the T side: the Brazilians won the second pistol and eventually put together six consecutive rounds to move ahead 10-8.
Aurora recovered enough to reach 11-11, but FURIA took the final two rounds and stole their opponent's map pick 13-11. The second half ended 9-3 in FURIA's favor.
Nuke followed a similar pattern early, with Aurora again starting 3-0. This time, however, they managed to convert the advantage into a map victory.
Kaike "KSCERATO" Cerato's 1v3 kept FURIA within range, and the teams remained close deep into the second half. Aurora reached map point at 12-9, only for FURIA to force overtime, with FalleN completing a last-second defuse in the final round of regulation.
FURIA threatened to finish the series in overtime, but Aurora held on. Ismailcan "XANTARES" Dörtkardeş delivered three kills controlling Outside in the closing round as Aurora secured Nuke 16-14 and pushed the match to Mirage.
Then came the collapse Aurora could not recover from.
The international lineup built a commanding 9-3 first half on Mirage, capped by Jimi "Jimpphat" Salo winning a 1v2 in the final round before the switch. At that point, Aurora needed only four more rounds to eliminate FURIA.
They never got one.
FURIA took the second-half pistol and completely shut down Aurora's T side. Retakes, failed Aurora post-plants and Danil "molodoy" Golubenko's AWP combined to turn a 3-9 deficit into a 13-9 victory. FURIA won the CT half 10-0, with molodoy recording 18 kills and 149 ADR on that side of the map.
Why This Match Matters
The victory kept FURIA alive in a tournament with no lower bracket once the playoffs begin. EWC's playoff stage uses a single-elimination format, with best-of-three series until the best-of-five grand final.
It also continued a clean progression through the tournament for FURIA. They opened their group with a 13-10 win over Wildcard before beating 9z 2-1 to qualify directly for the playoffs. The Aurora victory became their third consecutive match win at the event.
Aurora's exit carries a different significance because this is no longer the Turkish five that spent the first half of 2026 together.
The organization moved MAJ3R and soulfly to the bench in July before signing former MOUZ rifler Jimpphat and former Falcons in-game leader kyxsan, with Ashley "ash" Battye arriving as coach. The resulting lineup of XANTARES, woxic, Wicadia, Jimpphat and kyxsan is Aurora's first international iteration around its Turkish core.
There had already been positive signs in Paris. After losing their opening best-of-one to BIG, Aurora eliminated M80 2-0 and then swept JiJieHao 2-0 to reach the playoffs. Their run ended with leads on two of the three maps against a top-three opponent, but the inability to close those positions became the story of the series.
Head-to-Head Context
FURIA had also beaten Aurora in their previous meeting, a 2-0 result at the IEM Cologne Major on June 20. FURIA won Dust2 13-9 and Nuke 13-4 in that series.
That result needs context, however. Aurora still had MAJ3R and soulfly at the Cologne Major and did not complete the Jimpphat-kyxsan rebuild until July. The June meeting therefore says less about the current tactical matchup than it would if both teams had retained the same five players.
The EWC meeting provided a more relevant first look at FURIA against kyxsan's version of Aurora — and it was far closer than the previous 2-0 suggests.
Map Breakdown
Ancient — FURIA win 13-11
Aurora's decision to pick Ancient initially looked justified. Wicadia helped establish the early tempo and Aurora produced an 8-4 CT half.
The map changed after the break. FURIA won the T-side pistol, built momentum through a six-round run and repeatedly found openings before Aurora could stabilize its defense. Aurora did drag the score back to 11-11, but FURIA handled the final pressure rounds better and closed 13-11.
Turning an 8-4 deficit into a victory on the opponent's map pick gave FURIA the cushion they later needed.
Nuke — Aurora win 16-14
Nuke was FURIA's pick, but Aurora were the side that eventually converted.
KSCERATO's early 1v3 prevented the map from getting away from FURIA, and neither team managed to establish lasting control. Aurora moved to 12-9 and had three opportunities to finish the map in regulation, but FURIA forced overtime.
Aurora finally broke through at 15-14. XANTARES' triple around Outside denied FURIA another chance to extend the game and secured the decider.
Mirage — FURIA win 13-9
Mirage produced the night's most dramatic turnaround.
Aurora's 9-3 first half gave them a six-round cushion, and Jimpphat's late 1v2 appeared to put his team firmly in control. FURIA responded with one of the strongest defensive halves of the playoff round.
Aurora could not convert a single T-side round. FURIA won ten straight, frequently denying plants or retaking successfully after Aurora reached a site. molodoy was central to that defense, and the 21-year-old AWPer finished the series 64-45 with a 1.25 rating.
Key Players
molodoy — FURIA
molodoy's overall numbers were strong — 64 kills, 45 deaths and a 1.25 series rating — but his biggest contribution came when FURIA were closest to elimination. His 18-kill CT side on Mirage helped turn 3-9 into 13-9, and he was voted Player of the Match on HLTV's match page.
KSCERATO — FURIA
KSCERATO narrowly posted FURIA's highest series rating at 1.26 while matching molodoy's 64 kills. His 1v3 on Nuke was one of the rounds that stopped Aurora from opening a larger lead, and his consistency gave FURIA another reliable source of damage throughout the three maps.
FalleN — FURIA
FalleN combined his in-game leadership with a productive individual series, finishing 54-49 with a 1.13 rating. His most visible contribution was the last-second Nuke defuse that forced overtime at 12-12. FURIA eventually lost the map, but without that round the series would not have reached the same pressure point.
Wicadia — Aurora
Wicadia was Aurora's highest-rated player across the series at 1.23, finishing 61-51. His four-kill pistol on Ancient was part of Aurora's strong opening, but his individual output was not enough once FURIA began winning the decisive late rounds.
XANTARES — Aurora
XANTARES did not lead Aurora statistically, but he delivered the play that kept them in the tournament for another map. His triple on Nuke closed the overtime victory and forced Mirage. Aurora were unable to give him the same kind of openings on their final T side.

What Comes Next?
FURIA's reward is another elimination series with little recovery time.
They face G2 in the first EWC quarter-final on August 20. G2 reached the match by beating Astralis 2-1 in the Round of 16 and entered the quarter-final ranked No. 10 on HLTV, compared with FURIA at No. 3.
There is recent history between the two organizations, although all of the listed meetings on the current match page date from 2025. FURIA won the most recent series between them 2-0 at the StarLadder Budapest Major, but both sides have changed since then, making current form more useful than the raw historical record.
For Aurora, EWC ends at the first playoff hurdle. Their new roster has already shown enough firepower to threaten elite opposition, but the FURIA series exposed a more immediate problem: building leads was not the issue. Converting them against a team capable of changing pace and surviving difficult economies was.
