FURIA and MOUZ survive huge comebacks as G2, FUT reach EWC 2026 quarter-finals

FURIA and MOUZ survive huge comebacks as G2, FUT reach EWC 2026 quarter-finals

FURIA and MOUZ produced the defining recoveries of the opening day of the Esports World Cup 2026 playoffs, joining G2 and FUT in the quarter-finals after four three-map Round of 16 series in Paris.

FURIA overturned a 3-9 halftime deficit on the Mirage decider against Aurora, winning ten consecutive CT rounds to complete a 2-1 victory. MOUZ escaped an even more precarious position, recovering from 2-10 down on Nuke to eliminate GamerLegion. Earlier, G2 bounced back from a poor opening map against Astralis, while FUT recovered from losing Ancient to end magic's tournament run.

The results filled the first four quarter-final places in EWC's single-elimination playoff bracket. Astralis, magic, Aurora and GamerLegion are eliminated, while G2 will face FURIA and FUT have been paired with MOUZ. The $2 million tournament continues with the remaining four Round of 16 matches on August 20.

Main Storylines

The first playoff day rewarded resilience more than clean Counter-Strike.

G2 and FUT both lost their opening maps before taking control of their series, but FURIA and MOUZ went considerably closer to elimination. FURIA repeatedly allowed Aurora to build leads before grinding their way back, while MOUZ were two rounds away from a 2-1 exit after GamerLegion's 10-2 CT half on Nuke.

That made the individual responses particularly important. Danil "molodoy" Golubenko dominated the decisive CT side for FURIA, while Adrian "xelex" Vincze went from a disastrous Ancient performance to the driving force behind MOUZ's Nuke comeback. FUT's young core also recovered from losing nine of the series' 13 clutch rounds, and G2 found enough firepower from Artem "r1nkle" Moroz and Nemanja "huNter-" Kovač to prevent Astralis from building on their convincing Ancient win.

The day's results also largely kept the higher-ranked contenders alive. The August 17 HLTV ranking had FURIA third, MOUZ fifth and G2 tenth, while FUT entered the matchup with magic ranked 14th.

Match Breakdown

G2 defeat Astralis 2-1

Astralis looked capable of derailing G2 after a dominant opening map, but the series changed sharply once G2 moved onto their own Dust2 pick.

G2's current five of r1nkle, MATYS, huNter-, NertZ and HeavyGod found considerably more space after Ancient, with r1nkle and huNter- eventually finishing as the two highest-rated G2 players across the series.

Ancient — Astralis 13-6

Astralis immediately justified their map pick by racing into a 6-0 lead.

G2 finally broke through and reduced the deficit with five consecutive rounds, but Astralis took the final round of the half and then controlled the defensive side. Six wins from the opening seven rounds after the switch ended G2's comeback attempt before it could properly develop.

Astralis' victory was convincing, but it proved difficult to reproduce once the series moved away from their pick.

Dust2 — G2 13-6

G2 answered with a far cleaner offensive showing.

Astralis did not find their first defensive breakthrough until the ninth round, when Gytis "ryu" Glušauskas produced a triple on B. By then G2 were already in control, and they took a 9-3 advantage into halftime.

A pistol-round conversion pushed the score to 11-3 after the break, leaving Astralis too little room to mount a meaningful recovery. G2 closed 13-6 and sent the series to Inferno.

Inferno — G2 13-7

The decider was more competitive early. G2 recovered from losing the opening pistol with a force-buy victory and established a 4-1 lead before carrying a 7-5 advantage into halftime.

NertZ became particularly influential in the closing stages. His second-half pistol triple created immediate separation, and further multi-kills helped G2 break Astralis' resistance.

G2 won 13-7 to complete the comeback. huNter- ended the series with 50 kills and a 1.30 rating, while r1nkle posted a team-best 1.31 rating with a 42-29 K-D.

FUT defeat magic 2-1

FUT's series was less comfortable than the final two maps might suggest.

Krabeni's team consistently gained advantages in the opening exchanges — HLTV recorded FUT with a 38-25 advantage in opening kills — but magic repeatedly punished them in late-round situations. FUT lost nine of the 13 clutch rounds played across the series.

Ancient — magic 13-9

magic opened with a 3-0 lead before FUT responded through the first gun rounds.

The momentum changed again when Nikita "tenzy" Kochenyuk won a remarkable armorless 1v4 during an eco round. The clutch disrupted FUT's economy and helped magic establish an 8-4 halftime advantage.

FUT tied the map at 8-8 after the switch, with dem0n supplying a quad-kill during the recovery, but magic continued to win the decisive late-round situations and closed 13-9.

Anubis — FUT 13-7

FUT again started slowly, and magic continued to steal rounds that appeared favorable to their opponents.

Svyatoslav "MaSvAl" Masko converted a low-health 4v2 situation, while tenzy added another clutch. This time, however, FUT maintained enough control between those isolated setbacks.

Nikita "cmtry" Samolotov supplied several key multi-kills and then won a 1v2 after magic's second-half force-buy victory, preventing the underdogs from turning the economy in their favor. FUT pulled away to win 13-7.

Mirage — FUT 13-8

The decider was FUT's strongest map.

magic managed just three first-half rounds, all through difficult clutch situations, while FUT consistently controlled the more conventional gun rounds and reached halftime 9-3 ahead.

magic threatened one final comeback by putting together five consecutive rounds in the second half, but FUT's margin proved sufficient. They broke the run and closed 13-8.

dem0n finished the series at 57-42 with an 81.9 ADR and 1.35 rating, the highest mark in the match.

FURIA defeat Aurora 2-1

Few teams on the opening playoff day made life more difficult for themselves than FURIA, but their ability to recover from losing positions ultimately separated them from Aurora.

Aurora led at halftime on both Ancient and Mirage and reached map point first on Nuke. FURIA still escaped with the series.

Ancient — FURIA 13-11

Aurora opened their pick with momentum after Wicadia's four-kill pistol round and eventually built an 8-4 halftime lead.

FURIA transformed the map after switching to the T side. A second-half pistol victory started a six-round streak that turned the deficit into a 10-8 advantage.

Aurora eventually levelled the score at 11-11, but FalleN's team claimed the final two rounds to finish the comeback in regulation.

Nuke — Aurora 16-14

Aurora again took an early lead, although a KSCERATO 1v3 prevented their CT side from completely running away with the half.

The map remained tight after the switch. Aurora eventually reached 12-9 and three map points, but FalleN completed a last-second defuse in the final regulation round to send Nuke to overtime.

FURIA briefly threatened to steal another comeback, but XANTARES' triple outside finally secured the map for Aurora at 16-14 and forced Mirage.

Mirage — FURIA 13-9

Aurora appeared to have finally broken FURIA when Jimpphat's 1v2 secured a 9-3 halftime lead.

They would not win another round.

FURIA's CT defense completely shut down Aurora's offense, with post-plant situations and site executions repeatedly collapsing. molodoy became the central figure in the recovery, recording 18 kills and 149 ADR on the CT side alone.

Ten straight rounds completed one of the day's biggest reversals and sent FURIA into the quarter-finals.

MOUZ defeat GamerLegion 2-1

MOUZ advanced, but the manner of their victory raised more questions than answers.

The BLAST Bounty Season 2 champions struggled with inconsistent mid-rounds and individual errors throughout a series in which GamerLegion came within touching distance of the quarter-finals. The most extreme swing belonged to xelex, who went from 13-35 on Ancient to 27-15 on the Nuke decider.

Mirage — MOUZ 13-11

MOUZ began their pick strongly and moved 6-1 ahead behind Spinx's lurks and aggressive plays from xertioN.

GamerLegion adjusted, with hypex and FL4MUS producing important multi-kills to level the score at halftime.

The underdogs then moved ahead 11-8 on their T side, putting MOUZ under real pressure. Spinx and xertioN helped stop GamerLegion's late attacks, before xelex produced a four-kill final round to complete the 13-11 escape.

Ancient — GamerLegion 22-19

Ancient became a marathon.

MOUZ led 7-5 at halftime despite regularly fighting from difficult man-disadvantage situations, and torzsi's Tec-9 quad-kill later helped them stretch the score to 11-7.

GamerLegion refused to disappear. They forced overtime and continued capitalizing on MOUZ's mistakes, while xelex endured a brutal individual map.

hypex won a 1v2 and Tauson delivered a decisive 1v3 as GamerLegion eventually closed 22-19.

Nuke — MOUZ 13-11

GamerLegion seemed ready to complete the upset after a dominant defensive half.

MOUZ's attack produced only two rounds, leaving them 2-10 behind at the switch and needing an almost flawless CT side to survive.

That is precisely what followed.

xelex, after recording just 13 kills and 35 deaths on Ancient, repeatedly delivered multi-kills during MOUZ's comeback. The academy graduate finished Nuke 27-15 as MOUZ won nine straight rounds to take the lead.

GamerLegion managed only one round in the second half. MOUZ immediately answered it with the final two rounds, completing the 13-11 recovery and escaping into the last eight.

Head-to-Head Context

G2 vs Astralis

G2 also won the teams' previous 2026 meeting, beating Astralis 2-0 at BLAST Rivals Season 1 on April 29. G2 took Dust2 13-5 and Overpass 13-9.

That history has limited predictive value because both organizations have since undergone significant roster changes, but G2 have now won both of their recorded 2026 series against Astralis.

FUT vs magic

There was no recorded head-to-head history between the two teams on HLTV before their EWC Round of 16 match. In this case, their current form and map pool were more relevant than historical meetings.

FURIA vs Aurora

This matchup carried much stronger recent history.

FURIA eliminated Aurora 2-0 in the IEM Cologne Major semi-final on June 20, winning Dust2 13-9 and Nuke 13-4. Aurora offered considerably more resistance in Paris and managed to take Nuke this time, but the result remained the same: FURIA advanced and Aurora went home.

GamerLegion vs MOUZ

Before EWC, HLTV's listed head-to-head showed MOUZ winning their previous meeting at ESL Pro League Season 22 in October 2025, taking Nuke 13-3 and Overpass 13-9.

Both lineups have changed substantially since then, making that old series less useful as a direct comparison than their current form.

Key Players

Dmytro "dem0n" Myroshnychenko — FUT, rifler: The 18-year-old led FUT statistically against magic with 57 kills, 81.9 ADR and a 1.35 rating. His impact became especially important after FUT dropped Ancient and needed to regain control of the series.

Nemanja "huNter-" Kovač — G2, rifler: huNter- supplied the largest raw frag total in G2's win, finishing 50-33 with 88.4 ADR and a 1.30 rating. His 29 kills on Dust2 and Inferno helped G2 recover from their poor start.

Artem "r1nkle" Moroz — G2, AWPer: G2's summer AWP signing produced a series-best 1.31 rating for his team and finished 42-29. His strongest work came on Dust2 as G2 reset the series.

Kaike "KSCERATO" Cerato — FURIA, rifler: KSCERATO remained FURIA's highest-rated player across the full Aurora series, recording 64 kills, 88.1 ADR and a 1.26 rating. His early 1v3 on Nuke was also one of the rounds that prevented Aurora from taking complete control.

Danil "molodoy" Golubenko — FURIA, AWPer: molodoy finished just behind KSCERATO at a 1.25 rating but was arguably the decisive player on Mirage, where he recorded 18 CT-side kills during FURIA's ten-round comeback.

Adrian "xelex" Vincze — MOUZ, rifler: His overall 0.88 series rating does not capture the story. xelex went 13-35 on Ancient, then responded with a 27-15 Nuke and seven multi-kill rounds as MOUZ recovered from 2-10 down. Few players on the day experienced a more dramatic map-to-map turnaround.

Interesting Facts

All four opening-day Round of 16 matches finished 2-1, meaning none of the first four quarter-finalists advanced without dropping a map.

FURIA's win extended their recent advantage over Aurora after also eliminating them from the IEM Cologne Major semi-finals two months earlier.

MOUZ entered EWC only weeks removed from winning BLAST Bounty Season 2 Finals, where they defeated Spirit 3-1 in the final, making their struggles against GamerLegion particularly notable.

FUT's victory came despite losing nine of 13 clutch rounds against magic, underlining how much stronger they were in opening engagements and standard gun-round situations.

Aurora led at halftime on Ancient and Mirage and reached 12-9 map point on Nuke, yet still lost the series. Their inability to convert advantages became the defining theme of their elimination.

Tournament Implications

Four of the eight quarter-final slots are now confirmed.

G2 and FURIA occupy one quarter-final, giving G2 an immediate test against the highest-ranked team to advance on day one. FURIA entered the week third in HLTV's world ranking and arrive with confidence from their extraordinary comeback against Aurora.

The other confirmed pairing is FUT against MOUZ. That matchup already has fresh history: FUT defeated MOUZ 2-1 during the EWC group stage on August 14, while MOUZ also lost 1-2 to FUT at the Cologne Major in June. Their quarter-final therefore offers MOUZ a quick opportunity to reverse two recent defeats.

Astralis, magic, Aurora and GamerLegion leave the tournament in the 9th-16th-place bracket after their Round of 16 defeats. With the playoff portion operating as a single-elimination bracket, there is no lower bracket or second chance from this point onward.

The remaining quarter-finalists will come from NAVI vs Legacy, Falcons vs The MongolZ, FaZe vs Vitality and B8 vs Spirit.
