FaZe forced to forfeit ESL Pro League match vs G2 after lineup dispute

FaZe have officially suffered a technical loss in their ESL Pro League Season 22 opener, forfeiting their Swiss Round 1 match against G2 Esports due to a dispute over roster eligibility. The forfeit was confirmed by ESL, which cited FaZe’s inability to field a lineup compliant with its rulebook.

What happened: behind the scenes

The scheduling note on the match page now reads: FaZe forfeit, marking them unable to play a valid lineup. FaZe arrived in Stockholm intending to play with Twistzz in place of rain, but it violated ESL’s roster rules tied to the Valve Regional Standings (VRS) invite used to seed the event.

According to the rules:

  • Teams invited based on VRS must retain at least three of the five core players from their July 7 VRS lineup.

  • Once a team plays in a qualifier or main event, they must maintain a majority of that “invite” roster throughout.

FaZe’s original invite roster (from July VRS) was: karrigan, frozen, rain, s1mple, EliGE. In contrast, their active lineup for the match included karrigan, frozen, broky, jcobbb, Twistzz—only two of those (karrigan, frozen) were in the original five. Because of that, they violated the “three-of-five” requirement.

ESL’s official statement noted the forfeit came just hours before match start, indicating the dispute was unresolved until late.

Immediate reaction & aftermath

Within a short time, FaZe announced a roster adjustment: rain will be reinstated for the duration of Pro League in place of jcobbb. This move restores FaZe’s compliance with the core rule—ensuring three members of the original invite five are present.

The change is described as temporary: once Pro League concludes, jcobbb is expected to return for other events (e.g. CS Asia Championships).

What this means for FaZe

  • Standings penalty: With a forfeit, FaZe start Stage 2 at 0–1, giving their Swiss bracket campaign a tougher opening.

  • Roster instability spotlight: The drama underscores risk when changing key players ahead of major events.

  • Urgent bandwidth for compliance: The late timing suggests FaZe and ESL may have misaligned on clarifying roster legality.

  • Fan and community scrutiny: Many observers have lambasted the situation as a management oversight, especially given how high-stakes ESL events are. (Reddit threads already mention the failure to maintain three invited players.)

Dust2.us also noted that while fans and FaZe expected Twistzz, FaZe should have anticipated the rules’ constraints—and that the forfeit could have been avoided earlier.

Broader context & possible implications

The risk of lineup tinkering

This situation is a textbook example of why organizers maintain rules about roster consistency across qualification and main events: to prevent teams from reshaping their lineups post-invite. FaZe’s intent to reintroduce star power (Twistzz) collided with those guardrails.

Reputation & momentum

FaZe entered the season with high expectations following their big shakeups (e.g., benching rain earlier). A forfeit undercuts competitive momentum and risks narrative damage—fans may question the stability and professionalism behind roster decisions.

ESL & rule enforcement visibility

The late adjudication raises questions about ESL’s communication and enforcement processes. Teams may demand clearer prevalidation of roster changes to avoid last-minute surprises.

Redemption path & repair

FaZe’s route back in:

  • Maintain compliance for the rest of Pro League.

  • Demonstrate competitive results with the reinstated rain.

  • Repair trust with their roster—jcobbb will need a path back in.

  • Avoid further procedural missteps.
