Cache Dominates CS2 Matchmaking After Long-Awaited Return

Cache has officially become the hottest map in Counter-Strike 2. Shortly after its release in CS2, the legendary map surpassed both Dust2 and Mirage in total matchmaking share, marking one of the biggest map launches in Counter-Strike history.

According to statistics from Leetify referenced by Cybersport.ru, Cache accounted for 43.5% of all CS2 matches on launch day, outperforming Dust2 and Mirage combined. The map’s popularity later stabilized but still held nearly 20% of all matches by May 3, despite not being included in Premier matchmaking yet.

At the moment, Cache is only available in:

  • Competitive
  • Casual
  • Deathmatch
  • Retakes

Even with limited playlist availability, the map quickly became one of the most played locations in CS2.

Valve Added Cache in Major CS2 Update

Valve officially released Cache for Counter-Strike 2 on April 29 as part of a major game update. Alongside the map addition, the patch introduced several gameplay and visual adjustments, including:

  • Dust2 Mid Box changes
  • Office improvements
  • Updates to Stronghold and Poseidon
  • Sound and shader fixes
  • Animgraph 2 improvements

Soon after release, Valve deployed another update specifically targeting Cache. The developer adjusted:

  • Bomb explosion radius
  • Vent lighting
  • A-site visibility
  • B Main and Checkers geometry
  • Multiple clipping and sound bugs

These fast follow-up changes suggest Valve is actively monitoring player feedback regarding the map.

Cache Release Was Teased Before Official Announcement

Before Cache arrived in CS2, several hints pointed toward the map’s return.

Insider Gaming previously reported that Valve changed the official CS2 social media banner to what appeared to be Cache’s Terrorist spawn area. Earlier in 2026, the official Counter-Strike account also replied “It’s cooking” to a NAVI-related post discussing the map.

After the release, Valve celebrated the return with a short social media message:

“Welc☢️me back.”

The teaser campaign generated significant hype across the Counter-Strike community weeks before launch.

s1mple Reacts to Missing Cache Graffiti in CS2

Cache’s return also reignited discussions around one of the most famous moments in CS:GO history — Oleksandr “s1mple” Kostyliev’s iconic falling AWP no-scope during ESL One Cologne 2016.

The original graffiti dedicated to the play was not included in the new CS2 version of Cache. Responding to the change, s1mple commented:

“Cache looks so beautiful. Not a big deal, I see it every day on my body.”

The quote quickly spread throughout the CS2 community and became one of the most discussed reactions after the update.

Why Cache Remains One of CS2’s Most Popular Maps

Cache has long been considered one of the best competitive maps in Counter-Strike history thanks to its:

  • Balanced layout
  • Clear visibility
  • Strong tactical depth
  • Fast-paced gameplay
  • Popularity in professional esports

The map originally entered CS:GO’s Active Duty pool in 2014 before being removed in 2019.

Some of Counter-Strike’s most memorable esports matches were played on Cache, including Fnatic vs Astralis at ELEAGUE Major 2017, which reached nearly 800,000 peak viewers according to Esports Charts.

Will Cache Join CS2 Premier and Competitive Esports?

Despite its explosive debut, Cache is still absent from:

  • CS2 Premier
  • Active Duty map pool
  • Official Valve tournaments

Many professional players and fans now expect Valve to eventually integrate Cache into high-level competitive play. However, the developer has not confirmed whether the map will return to Premier matchmaking or the professional circuit.

For now, Cache’s massive player numbers clearly show one thing: the Counter-Strike community still considers it one of the greatest maps ever created.
