BIG and K27 Qualify for EWC 2026 CS2 Main Event After Paris Run

BIG and K27 have secured places at the Esports World Cup 2026 Counter-Strike 2 main event, surviving the decisive stage of the Open Qualifier in Paris with victories over Sashi and fnatic respectively.

BIG defeated Sashi 2-1 after winning Cache and Ancient, while K27 recovered from a difficult middle map against fnatic to close their series 2-1 on Cache. The victories moved both teams into the 32-team EWC field, which begins competition on August 12 in Paris.

The completed Open Qualifier ultimately sent BIG, K27, 100 Thieves and JiJieHao into the main tournament, completing the 32-team EWC field. 

BIG and K27 Take Different Routes to EWC Qualification

BIG entered the decisive series against Sashi as the No. 2 seed and largely lived up to that status.

The German organization opened the series with a convincing 13-5 victory on Cache, but Sashi answered by taking Inferno 13-9. That defeat was BIG's only map loss across the qualifier according to HLTV. 

Ancient therefore became the qualification decider.

BIG recovered quickly and won the map 13-8, completing the 2-1 series victory and booking their place in the EWC main event.

Gleb "gr1ks" Gazin led BIG in the qualification series with 52 kills and a 1.32 Rating 3.0, while Benjamin "blameF" Bremer and Johannes "tabseN" Wodarz also finished above a 1.00 rating. HLTV reported that gr1ks ended the entire qualifier with a 1.58 rating and was BIG's highest-rated player on six of their 11 maps.

The victory also stopped a productive Sashi run. The Danish side had collected four series wins in Paris, including an elimination victory over Virtus.pro, before running into BIG. 

K27 Eliminate fnatic to Reach EWC 2026

K27's qualification series followed a considerably more dramatic path.

The Russian team began strongly by beating fnatic 13-8 on Ancient, but the series changed direction on Mirage.

fnatic reached series point following a 1v3 from Volodymyr "mazay" Iorhachov. K27 nevertheless survived, with fnatic failing to convert a 5v3 advantage at 12-11 before K27 eventually forced overtime and won Mirage 16-13. 

That collapse carried directly into Cache.

K27 surged to a 10-4 advantage and eventually closed the decider 13-10, completing their 2-1 win and securing qualification.

Daniil "qw1nk1" Kabilov finished the series with a 1.18 rating, while Danila "kashl1d" Dronov posted 1.16 and Aleksey "xeedo" Mikulich recorded 1.14. HLTV also highlighted qw1nk1 and xeedo for reaching 90 ADR apiece on the deciding map.

HLTV lists these as the teams' current five-player lineups. K27's newest addition is clax, who has replaced the previous stand-in situation involving Petr "fame" Bolyshev. 

Why BIG's Qualification Matters

For BIG, qualification reinforces a promising stretch ahead of another major international test.

The clearest positive from Paris was gr1ks.

The Belarusian AWPer was already one of the most important pieces of BIG's lineup, but his qualifier performance gave the organization exactly the type of high-impact AWP output needed against stronger opposition. His 1.58 event rating reported by HLTV is especially notable given that BIG played 11 maps. 

There is also value in how BIG qualified.

They dropped only one map during the entire qualifier and responded immediately by winning the Ancient decider against Sashi. That does not guarantee the same success against EWC's elite teams, but it gives BIG momentum rather than simply a ticket to Paris.

Why K27's Qualification Matters

K27's result carries a different significance.

The EWC main event will be only the organization's second Big Event, according to HLTV. Their previous appearance came at PGL Astana 2026, where they exited with a 0-3 record and finished 15th-16th. 

That makes EWC an immediate opportunity to measure the development of one of the younger lineups in the field.

Their Astana experience also came under different circumstances. K27 used fame as a stand-in at that event, while their current lineup now includes clax. 

The core built around xeedo, qw1nk1, kashl1d and X5G7V therefore gets another opportunity against elite international opposition with a different fifth.

Tournament Impact: The EWC Field Is Complete

BIG and K27 were not the only teams to survive the Paris qualifier.

BIG: gr1ks raises the ceiling

BIG's most encouraging takeaway is the level shown by gr1ks.

His qualifier numbers indicate that BIG can generate substantial impact through the AWP position. Against the main-event field, however, maintaining anything close to his Paris qualifier output will be substantially harder.

The supporting structure is equally important. blameF and tabseN both produced positive qualification-series ratings against Sashi, giving BIG multiple sources of impact rather than forcing gr1ks to win the series alone. 

K27: another test for the prospect core

K27's qualification creates an important benchmark for xeedo and qw1nk1 in particular.

HLTV previously included both among its ranked prospects, and their strong Cache performances against fnatic helped turn qualification into reality. 

The question now changes from whether K27 can beat teams around their own competitive tier to whether that young core can remain effective against established top-level opposition.

What Changes Now?

Qualification immediately changes the competitive context for both teams.

BIG move from being one of the favorites in an open qualifying field to facing Aurora in their Group A opener.

K27 face an even more imposing first assignment: Falcons in Group B on August 12. HLTV's current K27 team page lists Falcons as their next opponent. 

Because the opening upper-bracket round is Bo1, there is at least some additional upset potential. A defeat does not immediately eliminate a team because the group stage operates under a double-elimination structure.

BIG vs Aurora: BIG's qualifier form will immediately be tested against a significantly stronger opponent. The key individual storyline is whether gr1ks can translate his dominant qualifier performance into the main event.

Falcons vs K27: K27 could hardly ask for a tougher measuring stick. The teams already met at PGL Astana 2026, where Falcons won 2-0, taking Ancient 13-11 and Dust2 13-5. 

K27's adaptation with clax: The EWC run offers a better indication of the current roster's ceiling than Astana, where fame played as a stand-in.
