BC.Game and M80 crash out as Roman Imperium Cup VI advances to playoffs
The group stage of Roman Imperium Cup VI has concluded in Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal, sending several notable teams out of the tournament and setting the stage for the playoff bracket. Among the most surprising eliminations were BC.Game and M80, two squads that entered the event with expectations of making a deep run but ultimately failed to secure a spot in the decisive stage of the competition.
The event, a Valve-ranked CS2 tournament featuring 20 teams and a $13,941 prize pool, has been running from March 12 to March 15 and serves as an opportunity for squads outside the elite tier to gain valuable ranking points and international experience.
BC.Game struggle despite high expectations
BC.Game arrived at the tournament as the highest-ranked team by Valve Regional Standings among the participants, which made their early exit particularly disappointing. The team finished the group stage with a 1–3 record, with their only credited victory coming via a technical default rather than a full on-server win.
Across their matches, BC.Game showed flashes of competitiveness but consistently fell short in key moments. The team suffered losses to Alliance (5–13) and Nexus (10–13), before dropping a narrow game to OG (11–13). The close margins suggested potential, but the squad repeatedly failed to convert crucial rounds, highlighting issues with late-round execution and tactical consistency.
The disappointing performance is another setback for BC.Game, who had previously shown promise earlier in the year. After a strong debut period and a top-six placement at the Parken Challenger Championship Season 1, the roster has struggled to maintain momentum and has gradually slid down the global rankings, currently sitting around 42nd place in the VRS standings.
M80 collapse after strong start
North American side M80 also failed to advance, despite beginning the group stage in promising fashion. The team initially secured victories over Nebula In Chaox and 9INE, putting them in a favorable position to reach the playoffs. However, their campaign quickly unraveled as the day progressed.
M80 suffered back-to-back defeats to JiJieHao and Rebels in one-sided best-of-one matches, ending their group run with a 2–2 record that ultimately left them outside the qualification spots. The unexpected losses were considered one of the tournament’s biggest surprises, as the North American roster had been among the stronger teams in their group heading into the final matches.
Tournament context and playoff race
Roman Imperium Cup VI follows a format that begins with a round-robin best-of-one group stage, where overtime wins and losses yield different point totals. The top teams from each group advance to a single-elimination playoff bracket played in best-of-three series, with an additional third-place decider match to finalize standings.
With the group stage completed, attention now shifts to the playoff stage, where several teams remain in contention for the title. OG have already shown strong form in the knockout rounds, advancing to the semi-finals after defeating JiJieHao in a swift 2-0 series.
Other squads, including teams such as Ninjas in Pyjamas and Alliance, have also remained competitive throughout the event, making the closing stages of the tournament difficult to predict.
Looking ahead
For BC.Game and M80, the early exit represents a missed opportunity to gain ranking points and confidence against a mixed field of European and international opponents. BC.Game in particular will be looking to quickly regroup ahead of upcoming competitions, including additional LAN appearances later in the season.
Meanwhile, the remaining teams will battle it out in the playoffs as Roman Imperium Cup VI approaches its conclusion, with the champion set to be decided before the tournament wraps up on March 15.
