Astralis punish G2 on Inferno to win 2-1 at FISSURE Playground 3

Astralis opened FISSURE Playground 3 with a 2-1 victory over G2, recovering from an overtime loss on Mirage to dismantle their opponents 13-5 on Inferno and move into the upper bracket of Group A.

The series finished 13-9 on Ancient, 17-19 on Mirage, and 13-5 on Inferno. It also reversed the result of the teams' meeting at the Esports World Cup less than three weeks earlier, when G2 had won their round-of-16 series 2-1.

Jakob "jabbi" Nygaard was the statistical leader for Astralis with 66 kills, a +19 K-D difference, 90.0 ADR and a 1.34 HLTV Rating 3.0. Victor "Staehr" Staehr followed with a 1.25 rating and a series-high 92.2 ADR, giving Astralis two consistent sources of damage across all three maps.

For G2, Guy "NertZ" Iluz was the only player to finish above a 1.00 series rating. He posted 56 kills, 85.8 ADR and a 1.17 rating, while huNter- finished at 0.98 and MATYS at 0.95. r1nkle and HeavyGod both ended the match on 0.85.

An 8-4 lead disappears on Ancient

The first warning for G2 came despite what initially looked like a comfortable opening map.

Astralis chose Ancient in the veto — the same map they had beaten G2 13-6 on during their previous meeting at the Esports World Cup — but G2 controlled the opening half and changed sides with an 8-4 advantage.

That lead disappeared almost immediately.

Astralis won nine of the ten rounds after the switch, limiting G2 to a single T-side round and turning an 8-4 deficit into a 13-9 victory. The difference in opening impact was significant: Astralis finished Ancient with a 14-8 advantage in first kills.

Staehr was central to the turnaround. He produced 18 kills, 103.5 ADR and a 1.69 rating, while jabbi added 21 kills and a 1.50 rating. G2, meanwhile, received little offensive production outside huNter-, whose 19 kills and 1.24 rating made him their best performer on the map.

The second half was particularly damaging because G2 had already done the difficult part. An 8-4 CT half had given them enough room to close their opponent's pick, but their offense generated almost nothing after the break.

NertZ keeps G2 alive after another lost lead

Mirage produced almost the reverse story.

This time G2 were the team to establish control early, building a 9-3 halftime advantage on their own pick. Astralis responded with a 9-3 half of their own, forcing the map into overtime before G2 eventually escaped 19-17.

The underlying numbers were much more favorable for G2 than they had been on Ancient.

They won the first-kill battle 23-13 and finished with a 1.13 team rating compared with Astralis' 1.04. NertZ was the main driver, recording a 1.52 rating, 28 kills, 95.2 ADR and a 9-2 opening-kill record. MATYS also supplied important aggressive output with a 1.27 rating and a 9-3 opening record.

Astralis still made G2 work considerably harder than the 9-3 first half suggested they should have needed to.

phzy kept Astralis in contention with 29 kills, and the Danish side erased the six-round deficit during regulation before G2 finally separated themselves in overtime. NertZ remained the difference there, giving G2 enough individual impact to avoid a 0-2 defeat.

It was a win, but not a convincing reset. Across the opening two maps, G2 had surrendered an 8-4 lead on Ancient and then allowed Astralis to recover from 3-9 on Mirage. The decider offered them no similar escape.

Inferno turns from G2 comfort pick into a problem

Inferno was left as the final map after Astralis removed Anubis and G2 took Cache out of the veto. On recent evidence, that should not have been an uncomfortable outcome for G2.

Before their loss to Falcons at BLAST Open Porto, G2 had won eight consecutive matches on Inferno. They had beaten Astralis 13-7 on the same map at the Esports World Cup, followed by victories against Aurora and NAVI during their Porto run. The 6-13 defeat to Falcons ended that streak; Astralis then handed them a second consecutive Inferno loss four days later.

The manner of the defeat was more concerning than the map itself.

G2 opened Inferno 3-0. From there, Astralis outscored them 13-2.

Astralis recovered to lead 8-4 at halftime and then allowed G2 only one round after the switch, closing the decider 13-5. They held an 11-7 first-kill advantage, won both clutches recorded on the map and finished with a 1.27 team rating to G2's 0.85.

This time it was not simply jabbi and Staehr carrying the workload.

HooXi and jabbi both finished Inferno with 1.40 ratings, while phzy posted a 1.28. HooXi recorded an 88.9% KAST, and phzy contributed 11 AWP kills as Astralis consistently denied G2 the kind of individual openings that had driven their Mirage win.

G2's bottom three numbers tell the other side of the story. MATYS managed a 0.77 rating, huNter- fell to 0.60, and r1nkle recorded only six kills with 43.5 ADR and a 0.51 rating.

For an AWPer, r1nkle's lack of influence was especially costly in a decider where phzy was finding considerably more value. Across the full series, phzy finished 56-45 with 36 AWP kills and an 80.3% KAST, while r1nkle ended 46-51 with a 0.85 rating.

Astralis win without relying on a first-kill blowout

The full-series numbers also show why reducing the result to aim or opening duels would miss part of the picture.

The teams finished level at 38 first kills each across the three maps. G2 actually produced a huge opening advantage on Mirage, but Astralis controlled that metric on both maps they won: 14-8 on Ancient and 11-7 on Inferno.

More importantly, Astralis had greater statistical depth.

Their overall team rating was 1.12 compared with G2's 0.96. jabbi and Staehr were comfortably positive, phzy finished +11 in K-D, and even HooXi ended only one death below even while winning three 1vsX situations across the series. G2's output was much more concentrated around NertZ.

Player K-D ADR KAST Rating 3.0
jabbi 66-47 90.0 78.9% 1.34
Staehr 57-50 92.2 78.9% 1.25
NertZ 56-53 85.8 73.7% 1.17
phzy 56-45 69.7 80.3% 1.05
HooXi 45-46 68.0 76.3% 1.02
huNter- 47-56 69.2 64.5% 0.98
MATYS 46-57 73.1 64.5% 0.95
ryu 44-50 62.9 75.0% 0.92
r1nkle 46-51 62.9 67.1% 0.85
HeavyGod 42-54 61.0 67.1% 0.85

A quick rematch produces a very different Inferno

The result is particularly notable when compared with the teams' August 19 meeting at the Esports World Cup.

Astralis also selected Ancient in that series and won it comfortably, 13-6. G2 responded by taking Dust2 13-6 before winning the Inferno decider 13-7. Less than three weeks later, Astralis again took Ancient but completely reversed the decisive map, moving from a six-round Inferno defeat to an eight-round victory.

The personnel were the same, which makes that change more relevant than an older head-to-head involving different lineups.

The teams entered FISSURE Playground 3 from very different schedules. Astralis had not played an official match since that EWC defeat on August 19, while G2 had competed throughout BLAST Open Porto and were coming off a 0-2 loss to Falcons on September 4.

The schedule alone does not explain the result, but Astralis looked considerably sharper once both Ancient and Inferno reached their second halves.

G2 now face an immediate elimination match

Astralis' win sends them into the Group A upper-bracket semifinal against BETBOOM. The winner of that series will secure a place in the FISSURE Playground 3 playoffs.

G2 have far less margin for error.

They drop into the lower bracket and will face BIG in a best-of-three elimination match on September 9.

The immediate problem is not simply losing to Astralis. G2 were competitive enough to win Mirage and generated the same number of opening kills across the complete series. The larger issue is how quickly two favorable positions disappeared — an 8-4 advantage on Ancient produced only one second-half round, and a 3-0 start on Inferno was followed by a 13-2 run for Astralis.

Against BIG, another defeat ends their tournament. The response will have to come quickly, particularly on an Inferno that has moved from an eight-match winning streak to two heavy defeats in the space of four days.
